Description
Titled French Room and signed "REG 35" at the lower right, this charming 1935 painting captures a richly furnished interior. A chandelier hangs above patterned chairs and a small table, while portraits, drapery, decorative objects, and a fireplace fill the room with detail. Expressive lines and washes of green, plum, and warm cream convey the atmosphere of a home gathered over time. Solid wood frame with a textured, weathered gray oak finish and gold gilt inner liner.
Similar to interior portraits of the layered rooms associated with Sibyl Colefax, John Fowler, and Sister Parish. Its lively depiction of a decorated room that resembles Chanel apartment at the Ritz Paris also has an affinity with the later interior paintings of Jeremiah Goodman.
Presented under glass with a cream mat and fine double-line border, the painting sits in a substantial solid wood frame with an intentionally textured finish and gold gilt inner detail. It would make a distinctive addition to a library, sitting room, or gallery wall.
