Description
An original pastel portrait of a white poodle by noted American animal artist Gladys Emerson Cook (1899-1976). This fine portrait shows off Cook's skills in rendering dogs - she was the author many books on drawing and painting, including one called ... "Drawing Dogs" (1958).
This miniature poodle sits facing the viewer, with a pale blue collar, set against a background of layered blues and charcoal. It is signed by the artist in the lower right.
The work is professionally presented in a custom gilt wood frame with a wide cream mat, giving it a gallery-ready look that suits a library, entry, or any dog lover's home.
More about the artist: Cook was a 20th century American artist best known for her drawings of dogs, many of which were used as book illustrations. She studied at the Art Students League of New York with Anthony Thieme and Yarnall Abbott. She is especially known for her pastels, and also created advertising art, including cat ads for Carter's Ink and Puss 'n Boots. Her work is held in collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, the Library of Congress, the Smithsonian Institution, and the AKC Museum of the Dog, and thirty-five of her watercolor drawings are part of the Index of American Design at the National Gallery of Art.
