Description
A beautiful small town scene, possibly in Bretagne, France, judging by the clerical figure walking down the street
Picturesque small village houses, great domestic atmosphere and light
Signed lower left M. Waterman
Marcus Waterman (USA, 1834-1914) was an American painter, mainly of landscapes and Orientalist subjects. Born in Providence, Road Island, he graduated from Brown University and then moved to New York, where he kept a studio in New York University building for 20 years. Waterman himself, claims that he either worked with or was influenced by Thomas Hill and William Morris Hunt. In 1874, Waterman accompanied a group of painters including Hunt on a sketching trip along the Massachusetts coast and as a result soon resettled in Boston. He also spent much time traveling in the 1870's, 1880's and 1890's; among his destinations were the Netherlands, France, southern Spain, and North Africa.
Possibly the presented here painting is related to one of those trips, most likely France
In 1909, after an artistic melt down he reportedly destroyed almost all of the remaining works in his possession and never painted again. He spent the last years of his life in Italy.
The painting comes in giltwood frame, ready for display
