Lot Essay:
John Fabian Carlson was born in 1874 in the hamlet of Kolsboro, in the Swedish province of Smaland, and emigrated with his family to New York in 1883. After first settling in Brooklyn, the family moved to Buffalo, where the teenage Carlson began sketching the sea, mountains, and trees of his homeland from memory, an early sign of the deep connection to nature that would define his career. He studied outdoor sketching and painting with the amateur actor and artist John Mayer, apprenticed as an engraver with the firm of Cosack and Company, and attended night classes at the Albright Art Gallery, where he studied life drawing under illustrator and painter Lucius Hitchcock. In 1902, he earned a scholarship to the Art Students League in New York, studying under Frank Vincent DuMond while supporting himself as a commercial artist and illustrator and as a bass-baritone soloist at the Baptist Church of the Epiphany.

Carlson went on to become a celebrated 20th-century impressionist painter and a leading figure of the Woodstock Art Colony in New York. He helped found the Woodstock School of Landscape Painting and served as its head from 1911 to 1917, shaping a generation of landscape artists through his teaching. In 1913, he married his former student Margaret Goddard, and the couple settled on a 26-acre property near the Glasco Turnpike, surrounded by the very woodlands that fueled his art. Working in the Tonalist and American Impressionist traditions, Carlson became highly regarded for his mastery of light and shadow in dense forest scenes, and he was especially famous for his meditative winter woods.

Carlson's painting "Winter in the Forest" stands as the epitome of his life's work, bringing together every element that made his reputation. The canvas is built on deep, structural tree trunks that give the composition its strength and rhythm, while complex layers of forest recede into the distance to create a sense of quiet depth. Across the ground, carefully patterned patches of sunlit snow capture the fleeting play of light filtering through the trees, demonstrating the control of light and shadow that set Carlson apart from his peers. Contemplative and serene, "Winter in the Forest" reflects both the boy who once sketched Swedish landscapes from memory and the mature master of Woodstock.
