Description
Group of 26 Panamanian or Colombian Guna or Kuna embroidered mola textile panels, 20th century. Depicting geometric motifs and anthropomorphic mythical beings.
Molas are hand-sewn cotton panels traditionally made in pairs and sewn into blouses. Serving as strong expressions of duality, repetition, and equilibrium, molas frequently feature an array of vibrantly colored compositions, ranging from geometric abstraction to imaginative scenes.
Length ranges from 13 in to 49 in; width ranges from 17 in to 60 in.

Condition
To the majority of the panels the colors are bold and bright; however to some the panels the colors are faded, particularly evident to the red. To some, there are small, scattered areas of soiling. To each, the edges of the work are not hemmed and are uneven, resulting in fraying along the perimeters. There are minute losses to the embroidery throughout, particularly evident along the verso.
