This 19th-century everyday stool is a wonderful example of form meets function. Crafted of northern elm (yumu) using mortise-and-tenon joinery, the antique Chinese stool has slender legs linked with crossed stretcher bars and a trefoil seat. The curved shape of the seat is charming and unusual, resembling a horseback saddle or a butterfly in flight, a common symbol of happiness. The wooden stool brings rustic appeal to any interior, now beautifully worn with a rich patina.
