Description
An elegant mid-century Japanese 4-panel byobu (folding room divider screen) depicting a serene classical scene of white herons/egrets resting on a willow tree branch. Executed in a traditional Showa Era workshop style, this piece offers massive visual scale and a timeless Asian Traditional aesthetic.
Unlike antique screens made with genuine precious metals, this high-quality mid-century decorative piece features hand-painted ink and gouache details over a printed gold-toned paper backing, beautifully replicating the classic gridded look of traditional Japanese gold leaf panels.
The artwork is framed with a subtle silk-brocade border, housed in a matte black wood frame, and protected by its original patinated metal decorative corner guards. The artwork features an original hand-brushed signature and an official red studio hanko stamp in the lower right corner.
(Note: Similar mid-century screen series are occasionally cataloged by dealers under the workshop trade name "Yukiga").
Dimensions: 35-3/4"H x 72 3/8"H" x 3/4"D
Condition:
Alterations: Original Condition Unaltered
Imperfections: Some Imperfections
Condition Notes: Good vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age and use. There is light cosmetic paper separation/splitting along the paper hinges where the panels meet (see close-up photos). This is purely cosmetic and does not affect the structural stability of the panels; it is completely invisible when the screen is displayed freestanding/zigzagged, and barely noticeable when hung flat. The painted surfaces and face of the screen remain bright and highly impactful.
The back of the screen has several dents and small penetrations in the delicate paper backing that have no effect on the painting side of the screen.
Two picture frame mounting plates have been added to the back of the screen which remain usable.
