Begun a year earlier, Georges Mathieu completed in 1967 the production of a series of posters for Air France, the initiative of which went to Pierre Sautet, Air France's Deputy Commercial Director. This unique encounter between art and advertising led to the presentation of the posters on October 26, 1967 at the Muse d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. They were a huge success: there were dozens of exhibitions organized in France and then around the world, and more than a million posters sold. After studying literature, law and philosophy at the University of Lille, Georges Mathieu, born in Boulogne-sur-Mer (Pas-de-Calais) on January 27, 1921, began painting in 1942. He died on June 10, 2012 in Boulogne-Billancourt. His work is currently present in at least seventy-nine museums and public collections. Founder of lyrical abstraction, pioneer of Action Painting, performances, dripping, gigantism, speed and risk, early inspirer of street art Presented is a lovely antique platter by TC Brown-Westhead, Moore & Co, a high end Staffordshire maker. This piece dates to around the 1880s-1890s, with the pattern registered in 1881. The platter features exceptional quality hand gilt decoration, depicting various flowers and other plants in raised high relief gold, richly detailed and well done. The porcelain itself is a mellow white shade, very appealing, especially with the sumptuous gold. Please note, we have other sizes of serving platter as well as sets of plates in various sizes in this same pattern, which you can find by searching âBrown Westhead Mooreâ in our store. This platter is in excellent condition. There is some minor wear to the gilt edge, visible in the photos, but the floral decoration is in great shape. There are no chips, no cracks, no breaks, and no repairs. The platter is stamped with the maker's mark for T. C. Brown Westhead Moore & Co, Staffordshire England, with the retail mark of Abram French & Co of Boston, in red. Beneath that is an English registry stamp, with the Roman numeral IV at the top for ceramics, A for December at the 6 o'clock position, 10 at the 12 o'clock position for the day, and E for 1881, giving us the pattern's date of December 10th, 1881. The platter measures about 18 3/4 by 15 1/8 inches, LxW. The useable surface area (interior of the rim) measures about 13 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches. The height at the rim is about 1 1/2 inches.
