Additional Details: Advertising poster for the Italian liqueur Maraschino Luxardo. This poster shows the Croatian port city of ZARA. The maraschino, or maraschino, marrasquino, maraskino, is a colorless liquor whose flavoring is obtained mainly by the use of the marasques distillate or the product of the maceration of cherries in alcohol of agricultural origin. This liquor is produced historically in the areas of Zadar in Dalmatia (Croatia), Torreglia near Padua and in Friuli (Italy). Traditionally, the bottle is wrapped in a straw case and has a minimum alcohol content of 24 ‚°. The original recipe for this liqueur was created by the Dominican apothecaries of the Zara monastery in present-day Croatia (formerly the Italian region of Dalmatia) at the beginning of the 16th century. It then bore the name ¢‚¬“Rosolj", which can be translated as ¢‚¬“dew of the sun". It later took the name of "Maraschino" because of its manufacture from marasque, Dalmatian cherry, a variety of sour cherry, as well as the leaves of its young branches. The first industrial distillery was created in 1759 by Francesco Drioli in Zara (now Zadar) in this town located in the north of Dalmatia, in the Republic of Croatia. In 1821, Girolamo Luxardo, Consul of the Kingdom of Sardinia in this city located in the north of Dalmatia, in the Republic of Croatia, opened a distillery. The Luxardo distillery quickly became the largest and most famous in the region. During the Anglo-American bombings of 1943 and 1944, the distillery was almost completely destroyed. The Luxardo company was then transferred, by Giorgio Luxardo, sole survivor of the family, to Torreglia, an Italian town in the province of Padua, in the Veneto region. In this region, the Luxardo company has industrial nurseries where more than 22,000 cherry trees of the Marasca Luxardo variety are cultivated.
