Antique 19th Century Scottish solid silver cigar box in rectangular form, inset with Queen Elizabeth I and Tudor era coins, typically threepence, groat or shilling. Twenty one coins decorate the piece in total, nine coins consecutively hammered on the lid and the remaining twelve encircling each side of the box. Neither coin is the same and with an array of Queen Elizabeth I and Tudor coinage, this unique cigar box is teeming with rich history. This exceptional piece would serve as a great addition to a seasoned collection.
Upon opening the hinged lid, a handwritten note is revealed:
"This box was a present to Edith Wardell-Yerburgh from the Duke of Westminster upon the occassion of her wedding on 21st January 1889." The wedding took place at St George's, Hanover Square and Edith and her husband Oswald Yerburgh, a Church of England clergyman amongst other things, combined their names the same year by assuming Royal Licence the additional name of Wardell. Previously Edith Wardell-Potts of Hoole Hall, she was an heiress to a banking fortune and eventually went on to birth three children with husband Oswald; Hilda, Arthur and Geoffrey, and their lineage is thriving to this day.
Hallmarked Scottish Silver (925 Standard), Edinburgh, year 1814 (i), Maker's mark RG&S (Robert Gray & Son, of Glasgow).
