An exceptional example of Brazilian mid-century modern design, this rare Concha sofa by Joaquim Tenreiro embodies the designer's unparalleled ability to merge sculptural form, comfort, and craftsmanship. Designed in the 1960s, the sofa takes its name from the Portuguese word for "shell," a reference to the gracefully curved silhouette of its enveloping backrest, which appears to float effortlessly above its elegant tapered legs.
Widely regarded as the father of modern Brazilian furniture design, Tenreiro pioneered a distinctly Brazilian design language that moved away from the heavier European influences of the early twentieth century. His work emphasized lightness, organic forms, and an extraordinary understanding of proportion-qualities that are beautifully expressed in this iconic sofa.
The dramatic sweeping back is softened by a delicate button-tufted interior, creating visual rhythm while enhancing the sculptural quality of the piece. The generous three-seat configuration offers exceptional comfort without sacrificing elegance, making it equally suited to formal living rooms, sophisticated lounges, hospitality projects, or curated collector interiors.
Crafted in hardwood and newly upholstered in luxurious mohair velvet, the sofa demonstrates the marriage of refined craftsmanship and enduring functionality that has made Tenreiro's work increasingly sought after by collectors, designers, and institutions worldwide. The warm cinnamon-camel mohair accentuates the sofa's organic silhouette while introducing rich depth, subtle luster, and exceptional tactile quality. Revered for its durability and softness, mohair remains one of the most coveted upholstery materials in luxury interiors, prized for both everyday use and long-term preservation.
Beyond its aesthetic significance, the Concha sofa represents an important chapter in the evolution of Brazilian Modernism. During the post-war period, designers such as Tenreiro helped establish Brazil as one of the most innovative centers of twentieth-century furniture design, producing works that rivaled and often surpassed their European and American contemporaries in originality and craftsmanship.
Today, authentic Tenreiro seating pieces of this scale and sculptural presence are increasingly difficult to acquire, particularly examples that retain their elegant proportions and collector-grade presentation. The sofa functions equally as a statement centerpiece, a conversation piece, and a historically important design object.
Its versatility allows it to integrate seamlessly into a wide range of interiors-from contemporary minimalist residences and sophisticated Manhattan apartments to Palm Beach estates, modernist homes, and curated hospitality environments. Whether paired with Brazilian rosewood furnishings, contemporary art, or European mid-century pieces, the Concha sofa brings warmth, character, and undeniable design pedigree to any space.
A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most recognizable and enduring forms from the golden age of Brazilian Modernism.
