This elegant set of four mid-20th century Chinese lacquer panels depicts traditional pastoral scenes-fishermen, water buffalo, and tranquil landscapes-each composition intricately detailed with hand-carved and inlaid mother-of-pearl.

What sets this set apart is the intentional low-relief construction: the lacquer ground is subtly carved and the shell inlay is layered to create depth, giving the scenes a sculptural quality that becomes especially striking under angled light. The natural iridescence of the shell reveals tones of pearl, celadon, and soft rose, enhancing the sense of movement and dimension.

Each panel is framed by a geometric mother-of-pearl border, providing contrast to the organic forms within. Together, the four panels form a cohesive visual narrative while also working beautifully as pairs.

Particularly striking when displayed under directional lighting, where the raised inlay casts subtle shadows and enhances the panels' sculptural quality. Ideal for layered, collected interiors-from mid-century to modern eclectic.
