Description
This antique French bronze bull sculpture captures the strength and commanding presence of the animal through finely detailed naturalistic modeling. Crafted in France circa 1890, the sculpture is attributed to Charles Valton (1851-1918) or a sculptor working in his artistic tradition, reflecting the celebrated French animalier school of the 19th century.
The muscular bull is depicted standing firmly on all four legs, its head slightly turned and its alert expression conveying strength and determination. The sculptor has carefully rendered the animal's powerful shoulders, prominent musculature, textured forehead, pointed horns, and curved tail. The lifelike proportions and detailed anatomical treatment emphasize the naturalistic approach characteristic of French animalier sculpture.
The bronze figure retains a rich, dark brown patina with subtle golden highlights that accentuate its sculptural details. It rests on a contrasting molded oval brass base with a warm gilt finish, providing an attractive presentation. Although unsigned, the work is attributed to Charles Valton or one of his followers based on its subject matter and naturalistic modeling.
Charles Valton (1851-1918) was a distinguished French animalier sculptor born in Pau and trained in Paris under Antoine-Louis Barye and Emmanuel Fremiet. He studied animal anatomy at the Jardin des Plantes and exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon beginning in 1868. His sculptures received numerous honors, including recognition at the Paris Universal Expositions, and he was appointed to the Legion of Honor in 1906.
Ideal for a library, office, or collector's cabinet, this antique bronze bull is in excellent condition commensurate with age and use, retaining its rich patinated finish and finely modeled details.
