Description
A handsome late 18th century American Windsor bow-back side chair dating to circa 1790, with the beautifully spare proportions and hand-worked construction associated with early American furniture. The continuous bowed crest rises above slender spindles and a shaped plank seat, supported by turned legs joined by a distinctive stretcher arrangement.
The chair appears to retain an old, possibly original surface with a wonderfully deep brown patina, softened edges, and wear accumulated through more than two centuries of use. That untouched character is a large part of its appeal. It feels equally at home pulled up to an old pine table, used as an occasional chair in a library, or placed against the wall of a Hamptons or New England house where its silhouette can stand on its own.
This is the kind of early American furniture that brings quiet history to a room without feeling museum-like: useful, beautifully made, and visually at ease beside English country antiques, coastal textiles, painted furniture, and old rugs.
