Description
A Mid-Century Modern rectangular oak coffee table created by Danish designer Kurt Ostervig in the 1960s. This minimalistic table is constructed of oak in a honey hue with natural graining throughout. A four-leg trestle base supports the top, making this coffee table exceptionally sturdy. Denmark, 1960s.
In the 1930s, Kurt Ejvind Ostervig made a career shift from working as a shipbuilding engineer to furniture design, influenced by his passion for woodworking. Ostervig's career as a furniture designer began at E. Knudsen's architectural design studio in Odense. Ostervig later opened his first independent studio in the 1940s as a freelance furniture designer, working exclusively in modern design. In the following decades, he collaborated with many well known 20th Century Scandinavian furniture manufactures.
Ostervig won awards at the Milan Triennale in both 1953 and 1960. One of Ostervig's designs was also selected for an exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art in New York City in the 1960s. Ostervig's versatility within Danish furniture design earned him significant recognition.
