Description
This beautifully executed oil on canvas captures Fra Angelico painting in the San Marco monastery. "Fra" is used as a title equivalent to brother preceding the name of an Italian monk or friar. Fra Angelico helped transform the art world and usher in the High Renaissance. He invented emotional interiority in art & is one of the most sublime painters of the Renaissance. The other monks go about their daily activities in this impactful and detailed painting by Otto Knille. Otto Knille is a listed German artist (1832 - 1898). He trained at the Academy of Dusseldorf under Carl Ferdinand Sohn and Wilhelm Schadow from 1848 onwards. Under the sponsorship of King George V he became a portrait painter for the German nobility. Living in Paris, Munich & Italy he became established as a history painter. He even worked on a series of wall paintings for Queen Marie's castle. The original frame adds an elegant finish.
