Length:109cm(42.91in) Width:51cm(20.08in)This snow landscape depicts a secluded dwelling among stream-lined mountains after snowfall. Mountain rocks are outlined with concise, powerful brushstrokes. Large blank areas on mountain surfaces stand for snow, while valleys and water are washed with pale ink, achieving a subtle balance of solid and void. In the foreground stand several bare winter trees with twisting, sparse twigs, interspersed with rocks and clumps of grass. In the middle ground lies tranquil stream water, beside which two thatched cottages nestle within cold woods, serving as the thematic focal point of seclusion. Distant rolling peaks are veiled by lightly washed mist, lending profound spatial depth and quiet ethereality. The artist’s inscription “Jiazi New Spring, Shuizhu Cunren” appears at the upper right, paired with a red artist seal, and a collector’s seal is stamped in the lower-left corner. Xu Shichang, courtesy literary name Shuizhu Cunren, drew inspiration from Wen Zhengming and Shen Zhou. His brushwork is steady and restrained. He excels at snow landscapes, conveying literati reclusive sentiment through quiet and sparse ink. Original old mounting, paper bears natural signs of age, well preserved.
