Description
Height:4cm(1.57in) Width:9cm(3.54in) Weight:80g(0.176lb)This is a pair of Hetian jade tiger tally of Han Dynasty, split into two halves which match perfectly when combined. The jade shows ancient texture with variegated brown and black infiltration penetrating deep into the material, covered by thick and mellow patina. Each half is shaped as a recumbent tiger with raised head, crouching body and upturned curled tail. Carved with concise and forceful lines, the beast presents a powerful and vivid expression. Seal script inscriptions are incised on the body, with characters corresponding mutually between two halves, complying with the ancient tally system. Pierced holes are reserved for cord threading. Tiger tallies served as military dispatch credentials in antiquity. This jade pair is extremely rare, possessing great value for sculptural art, paleography and historical research, ranking as an important collection among ancient jades.
