Xu Bangda (1911-2012), 'Autumn River Cliffs'. Length: 66 cm (25.98 in); Width: 31 cm (12.20 in). This landscape work was painted in Xu Bangda's eightieth-second year, depicting towering cliffs above an autumn river. The precipitous rock face is built up with layered textured brushwork, rendered in moist ink with pale cyan washes to convey the solid mass of stone. Red leaves dot the cliffside, evoking the atmosphere of autumn. The river stretches far into the distance under wispy clouds, with a small boat drifting on the water. Gnarled ancient pines cling to the rocks in the foreground. The upper right bears the artist's inscription: *Painted by Xu Bangda in the spring of Guiyou, at Chunwan, aged eighty-two*, sealed with one red seal "Xu Bangda". Xu Bangda was a towering authority on Chinese painting and calligraphy authentication in modern times. He was also an accomplished painter, drawing inspiration from Yuan and Ming masters. His brushwork is calm and refined with an elegant aesthetic. The scroll retains its original mounting with dark green silk borders, paper with natural age patina, in good condition
