Zhang Daqian (1899-1983), Splashed Color Lotus, Scroll. Length: 96 cm (37.80 in); Width: 43.5 cm (17.13 in). *Splashed-colour Lotus*, hanging scroll, colour on paper, by Zhang Daqian. This is a representative lotus-theme work. Lotus leaves are laid down with bold splashed-ink washes, overlaid with rich azurite and malachite mineral colours. Ink and pigments blend freely, creating rich layered effects. Pure-white lotus blossoms and one gilded red-petalled flower are dotted among leaves, forming striking visual contrast. Slender sturdy lotus-stalks are rendered with forceful brush-lines in well-arranged density, conveying the lively elegant charm of lotus pond. Running-script calligraphic inscription sits on the left, accompanied by two red seals. The painting combines freehand brushwork, splash-colour technique and outline-flower-dot-leaf method, with gorgeous colours and noble tranquil mood. In original silk-brocade mounting with natural age patina. It is an excellent splash-colour flower-and-bird work by Zhang Daqian, of great artistic appreciation and collectible value.
