Ma Hezhi (c. 1130-1170), Plum Blossom Picking by Stream and Mountain, Scroll, Song Dynasty. Length: 83 cm (32.68 in); Width: 42 cm (16.54 in). Color on silk. This fine landscape-and-figure painting by Ma Hezhi of the Southern Song Dynasty depicts the elegant theme of a scholar seeking plum blossoms in winter. The rocks are outlined in forceful lines with concise texture strokes, forming layered ravines. Gnarled ancient trees twist upward, their twigs detailed with delicate dotting. A stream winds through the valley, spanned by a wooden bridge, with white plum blossoms blooming on the slope. A robed scholar holding a walking stick pauses atop rocks with serene expression, accompanied by a boy attendant; another servant climbs among stones to pluck blossom branches. Multiple imperial collector seals of the Qianlong reign are stamped across the painting, with signature "Ma Hezhi" and seal in the lower left corner. Executed in Southern Song academy style, the work features archaic brushwork, muted antique coloring and a spacious tranquil mood, conveying the refined seclusion of literati plum-viewing. Old original mounting, the aged silk bears natural toning and is well preserved
