Li Cheng (919-967), Autumn River Fishing Retreat, Volume, Song Dynasty. Length: 712 cm (280.31 in); Width: 35.8 cm (14.09 in). Color on silk. This is an outstanding surviving landscape work by Li Cheng of the Northern Song Dynasty. The frontispiece bears large characters "Autumn River and Recluse Fisherman" inscribed by Wang Wenzhi. The painting depicts rolling autumn mountains, lush layered ridges and ancient trees. Rocks are painted with cloud texture strokes, amid misty haze, fully embodying Li Cheng's artistic style of bleak, tranquil and ethereal scenery. A secluded cottage nestles in mountains with a scholar at leisure; a lone fishing boat floats on the river, presenting the reclusive mood of autumn waters. The scroll is stamped with imperial collector seals from Song, Yuan, Ming and Qing dynasties. Multiple colophons by celebrated scholars including Qianlong's imperial inscriptions are attached at the end, recording its provenance. It retains ancient mounting, accompanied by original imperial storage tube. With well-documented transmission, it is a rare treasure of Northern Song landscape painting.
