Description
Dong Gao (1740-1818), Peony and Brocade Birds, Scroll, Qing Dynasty. Length: 126 cm (49.61 in); Width: 34 cm (13.39 in). Colour on silk. The painting depicts craggy Taihu rocks and blooming peonies, with a long-tailed golden pheasant perched amid flower branches. The aged rock is rendered with textured brushwork. The peonies blossom luxuriantly, with layers of pink and white petals and leaves painted in soft, elegant hues. The pheasant's plumage is meticulously delineated, with lifelike and tranquil bearing. Multiple imperial seals of the Qing court are stamped on the upper part of the painting. The inscription in the lower right reads: "Painted respectfully by your minister Dong Gao in the mid-spring of the 55th year of the Qianlong reign, Gengxu", accompanied by two red seals. Following the painting standards of the Qing imperial academy, this work features balanced composition, refined brushwork and elegant colours. It symbolizes wealth and auspiciousness, presented in its original old mounting as a fine imperial bird-and-flower painting.
