Jin Cheng (1878-1926), 'Seclusion by Streams and Mountains', Scroll. Length: 116 cm (45.67 in); Width: 37 cm (14.57 in). Ink on paper. This ink landscape by Jin Cheng depicts rolling lofty mountains. The rock faces are rendered with hemp-fibre texture strokes combined with short axe-cut texture, rich in layers and vigorous in tone. A waterfall rushes down the cliff amid wispy mist. Ancient trees cluster along the near bank, with brooks winding through the valley and a secluded cottage hidden among hills. A seven-character poem inscription appears on the upper right, dated "the sixth day of the tenth month of Yichou year, Jin Cheng of Beilou", accompanied by two artist seals, plus one collector's seal at lower left. Drawing upon Song and Yuan landscape traditions, it merges the grandeur of northern-school painting with the subtle brushwork of the southern school. With a soaring composition and imposing atmosphere, this well-preserved hanging scroll is a representative landscape work of Jin Cheng.
