Qi Baishi (1864-1957), 'Ink Shrimp'. Length: 68 cm (26.77 in); Width: 32 cm (12.60 in). Ink on paper. The painting depicts a group of lively shrimps swimming. The shrimp bodies are rendered with varying shades of ink, presenting translucent and layered effects. Heavy ink dots the shrimp heads to achieve a plump and moist texture. The shrimp whiskers are drawn with forceful and free long brush lines, interwoven densely and sparsely, vividly capturing the shrimps roaming freely in clear water. The inscription on the right reads "Jipingtang Laoren", sealed with two red square seals of Qi Baishi. Executed in concise and expressive freehand brushwork, this work fully embodies Qi's signature style of painting shrimps. It is an elegantly mounted old hanging scroll in good condition, a classic small work of the Qi school.
