Qi Gong (1912-2005), Distant Mountain in the River Village, Scroll. Length: 72 cm (28.35 in); Width: 32 cm (12.60 in). This work follows the cloud-mountain style of Mi Fu and Mi Youren, depicting misty riverside landscape of Jiangnan. Distant peaks are built up by horizontal ink dots, with clouds drifting amid mountains. Villages and woods scatter along the lakeside. In the foreground, tall trees grow on rocky banks beside a moored boat, and birds skim over the water. The ink displays rich tonal variations with fluid washes, capturing the atmosphere of misty rain. The brushwork is neat and elegant, successfully conveying the subtle and profound charm of Mi-school landscape. In original old mounting, paper bears natural age patina.
