Gao Jianfu (1879-1951), 'Plum Blossoms and Mandarin Ducks'. Length: 116 cm (45.67 in); Width: 45 cm (17.72 in). This fine flower-and-bird painting by Gao Jianfu depicts plum blossoms, camellias and mandarin ducks. Gnarled old plum branches dotted with white buds stretch across the upper part of the painting, with a bird perched on the twig. Below, a pair of mandarin ducks rest side by side on rocks, accompanied by blooming camellias with lush foliage. The work combines the refined modelling of classical academy bird-and-flower painting with the realistic shading characteristic of the Lingnan School. Birds are rendered with meticulous detail and rich feather texture; plum branches are powerful, camellias painted in soft tones. The running script inscription on the left is unrestrained. Blending traditional literati charm with realistic light and shadow, the painting symbolises harmony and bliss. Aged silk, original mounting.
