Wang Yachen (1894-1983), 'Willow Pond Goldfish'. Length: 78 cm (30.71 in); Width: 33 cm (12.99 in). Slanting willow branches with falling petals overhang the pond, where several goldfish swim among aquatic grass. The goldfish are rendered with light washes of colour, featuring graceful bodies and flowing tails. The willow twigs and grasses are painted in freehand brushwork with elegant and natural ink washes. The Chinese character for fish sounds the same as surplus, symbolizing abundance year after year. The scroll retains its original old mounting, with natural age-related toning on paper.
