Lot 0171 Details

Description
Egypt, ca. late 2nd millenium BC
An extremely fine and rare mummified head of a male, with strong features and retaining virtually all skin surfaces, dentition and hair. Likely New Kingdom or 1st Intermediate Period work of the highest quality. This is the companion piece to the (female) head we sold last year, and they are by far the finest examples to come on the market in decades, and easily compare to the best examples in the world's great museums.. Collected in 1877, see provenance below.

Dimensions
approximately 10" (26 cm) long

Provenance
Given by the Egyptian Government in 1877 to Dr. Christian Fenger (see biography). Remaining in the Fenger family until 2013. Copy of notarized affidavit attesting to provenance, signed by Dr. Fenger's grandson, is available.
Christian Fenger (1840-1902) was a Danish-born surgeon, pathologist, and instructor who became one of the most highly regarded surgeons in the United States. For his distinguished accomplishments he was knighted by the King of Denmark in 1901. From 1875 to 1877, Fenger worked in Egypt, treating eye diseases. When he left, he was offered this mummy head, by an Egyptian official, in gratitude for his services.
