Description
• One of only 50 MC12s built
• 12,500 km from new
• Maserati’s iconic 21st century supercar
After years of financial instability and lacklustre sales, Maserati was finally back on its feet by the mid 2000s, bolstered by successful sales of the Spyder, Coupe and Quattroporte models, and was at the point where they could create a new “halo” car for the brand. Under the ownership of Fiat S.p.A, the platform of Ferrari’s Enzo was utilized and Maserati’s engineers were left the Herculean task of improving upon of the greatest supercars ever built.
With its design penned by Frank Stephenson, the MC12’s beautiful coachwork laid over the Enzo’s mechanicals gave the car its very own personality and charisma. Thanks to its massive rear spoiler, the MC12 created more downforce than the Enzo, and the biggest difference was of course the presence of a removable hardtop, making for a truly unique driving experience on the open road. The differences between the two were more than just skin deep. The MC12 boasts slightly different engine mapping and traditional dampers instead of the electric dampers of the Enzo, as well as gear-driven cams rather than the Enzo’s chain-driven cams.
This supercar, however, would not be confined to the streets. The race-ready version of the MC12, the MC12 Corsa, was campaigned in the FIA’s GT and GT1 World Championship Series where it proved to be a formidable contender. Vitaphone Racing secured five consecutive team championships and a sixth of the first season of GT1 in 2010. Furthermore, Maserati won the Manufacturer’s Cup in 2005 and 2007 and six Drivers’ Championships, four in the FIA GT Championship from 2006 to 2009, one for the 2006 Italian GT Championship and another in the newly formed FIA GT1 class in 2010.
One of the earliest MC12s built, this particular example was delivered new to its native Italy on 3 January 2005 to businessman Renzo Zoppas, whose family business deals in the production of refrigerators and other household appliances in Italy. Passing into the ownership of another Italian in 2008, the car was imported into Germany by 2010, where it has remained ever since. Purchased by the current owner roughly five years ago, it has been driven regularly and currently has 12,500 km on its odometer from new, some 3,000 of which are from the current ownership.
Regularly maintained throughout its life, the car’s last service was completed by Maserati Eberlein last year. The car presents in highly original condition throughout, still wearing its original paint, and has been fitted with an aftermarket reversing camera to make low-speed manoeuvres easier.
With only 50 examples produced, the MC12 is without question the rarest and most desirable Maserati produced thus far into the 21st century, offering world-beating performance befitting of one of the most illustrious names in the Italian automotive industry. Driven regularly and always serviced on a regular basis, this would be an excellent example for the enthusiast looking to get behind the wheel of one of the greatest cars to wear the Maserati badge, and one that has already become widely recognized as a truly iconic automobile.
