George Elbert Burr - Superstition Mountains

Lot 0222 Details

Description
George Elbert Burr (1859-1939) - Superstition Mountains. c. 1920s, Etching. Image is 5.5” x 8”, 13" x 14.75" framed. The etching is in very good condition with only some darkening to the paper. The frame shows very minor wear. George Elbert Burr was interested in art from an early age and his first etchings were created with the use of zinc scraps found in the spark pan under the kitchen stove. He then printed the plates on a press located in the tin shop of his father's hardware store. His only formal training was three months at the Art Institute of Chicago. Throughout his lifetime Burr worked in a variety of mediums creating approximately fifty oil paintings, over a thousand watercolors, two-thousand pen-and-ink drawings and over twenty-five thousand etchings all pulled from his own presses. Acquired from a private collection in Arizona. The owner's great uncle was the original purchaser and this descended through the family.
