LONDON – The auctioneer reached Lot 1624 in what had been a three-day marathon of a sale and as the bidding started to spiral, my thoughts turned to how lovely it would be to take a holiday.

NATCHEZ, Miss. (AP) – For the past six years, the National Park Service has been chipping away at layers of antebellum Melrose’s history. Buried underneath more than 100 years of white paint are remnants of the original faux-marble paint finish that now can be seen by Melrose visitors.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) – A public lands proposal set to be unveiled next month would promote Utah’s reputation as a mecca for dinosaur fossils by elevating Dinosaur National Monument to a national park and by creating a new “Jurassic National Monument” in central Utah.

WASHINGTON TOWNSHIP, N.J. – Leighton Galleries’ July 30 auction highlighted a fresh-to-the-market collection of three framed Ansel Adams photographs. Leading off as lots 1 through 3, Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico realized $35,000, Clearing Winter Storm, Yosemite Valley achieved $30,000 and Aspens, Northern New Mexico, 1958 rounded out the trio at $22,000. Prices quoted are hammer prices and do not include the buyer’s premium.
