DENVER, Pa. – The festive sounds of turn-of-the-century music boxes and coin-op machines will ring through Morphy Auctions’ gallery Aug. 10 and 11 as the company presents a varied and colorful 1,100-lot sale of antique advertising and mechanical amusements. Internet live bidding will be available on both days.

The Friday session features the 50-year music box collection of Peter V. Fritsch of Kutztown, Pa. The assemblage of 30+ music machines consists mainly of American productions, with highlights including a Regina 27-inch automatic changer, $16,000-$18,000; a Regina 15½-inch automatic changer, $14,000-$18,000; and a Symphonium wood-cased hall clock, $10,000-$12,000. Morphy’s CEO Dan Morphy remarked that Peter Frisch has always been “a very particular buyer. Every machine he owns is special and has an extra or unusual feature that would not be considered standard.”

A selection of 130 occupational shaving mugs will follow. The top-estimated mug originally belonged to professional baseball player William J. Kuehne and reflects his occupation with its image of a player sliding into home plate alongside the catcher, with a full baseball diamond and players in the distance. Between 1883 and 1892, Kuehne played infield positions for teams in Pittsburgh, St. Louis and Cincinnati; and he was featured on 11 Old Judge Tobacco cards. With its crossover appeal to sports memorabilia collectors, Kuehne’s shaving mug is expected to make $6,000-$8,000. Another interesting shaving mug was quite likely a souvenir, as it features the image of the Lake Roland (Md.) Elevated Railway. It is estimated at $1,000-$1,500.

From a Philadelphia pharmacy that closed many years ago comes a fresh collection of more than 80 apothecary antiques, including apothecary jars, candy jars and show globes. A mint-condition 24-inch apothecary jar with Greek key motif is estimated at $2,000-$3,000; while an extremely rare teardrop-shape apothecary jar with similar decoration could bring $2,500-$4,000. Additionally, there are multiple sets of 3 to 5 matched jars, the type that late-19th- and early 20th-century pharmacists used to store pills, herbs and liquids.

Over 250 general store lots – including showcases and signs – will be offered to the highest bidder. A very rare circa-1880s Perry Davis Pain Killer tin sign is lithographed with busy, colorful images of people performing different tasks to produce a bottle of the pain medicine. Estimate: $4,000-$6,000. Also within the grouping of signs is a 1914-1915 Buffalo Bill Wild West Show poster estimated at $2,000-$3,000.

More than 50 coin-operated machines will open the Saturday session. An outstanding dual vending machine that dispenses both Chiclets chewing gun and Stollwerck chocolate leads the group. In untouched condition with beautiful porcelain panels, the machine could reach $10,000-$15,000 on auction day. Other noteworthy coin-ops include a 10-cent Rol-A-Top slot machine with an eye-catching cherry design on its façade, $6,000-$7,000; and a functional, circa-1920s Novelty Merchant Co. “digger” machine, $2,000-$4,000.

An attractive array of soda pop advertising awaits bidders, including an elusive and very desirable 1955 7-Up double-sided policeman store display sign. Of double-sided lithographed metal, it is similar in design to the more commonly seen Coca-Cola police crossing-guard figure. Estimate: $4,000-$6,000.

Speaking of the pause that refreshes, more than 200 Coca-Cola advertising lots will be auctioned by Morphy’s. A scarce 1920s-vintage Coke bottle lamp in fine original condition is estimated at $6,000-$9,000; while a 1902 Coca-Cola calendar featuring a beauty of the day could make $3,000-$5,000. A 1954 tin cutout sign depicting a 12-pack of Coke is expected to reach $2,000-$3,000.

The Saturday session will conclude with a 100-lot offering of tobacciana. Possibly by Robb or DeMuth, a well-detailed circa-1900 carved figure resembling Hercules – with a club in one hand and a pack of cigars in the other – is entered in the sale with a $10,000-$15,000 estimate. A circa-1870s plaster sign advertising Hondarez Cuban Cigars will cross the auction block with hopes of achieving $1,000-$1,500.

Both the Friday, Aug. 10 and Saturday, Aug. 11 auction sessions will commence at 10 a.m. Eastern Time. For additional information, call 717-335-3435 or e-mail serena@morphyauctions.com.

WOODBRIDGE, Conn. – Stan Tamarkin and partner Dean Bertoldi of Tamarkin & Bertoldi Vintage Auctions LLC will auction 105 lots of vintage cameras, lenses and accessories, including products from Leica, Nikon, Hasselbald, Rollei, Contax and Mamiya, on July 27, with the sale closing Aug. 10

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding for this online only auction. Bidders can place bids immediately on LiveAucitoneers.com.

Many of the bodies and lenses are so clean they appear unused. This is a great opportunity to add to, or start a collection, or find some true bargains on professional film cameras for daily use, say Tamarkin and Bertoldi.

Most of these products were the best the photographic world had to offer, and even today some of the lenses from Carl Zeiss are unrivaled for optic perfection—as in lot no. 30, a 40mm Distagon-CF designed for the Hasselblad system. Another rare lens being offered is lot no. 59, a West German 35mm PC-Distagon for the Contax R camera—seldom seen for sale.

For the Leica enthusiast, the auction has a Leica M3 double-stroke (refinished in black enamel), a Leica M2-R, a M6 Titanium and several others, all in mint or near mint condition, plus many Leica lenses to choose from including a mint 28-35-50mm Tri-Elmar-M.

There’s also a beautiful Hasselblad 503CX, Gold & Blue, 50th Anniversary set. An asset to any collection, lot no. 29 has a starting price of $2,500.

The Tamarkin & Bertoldi auctions of rare cameras, lenses and accessories are conducted throughout the year, encompassing both live and timed online only auctions. Bidding instructions for the current online only auction can be found on the Tamarkin & Bertoldi website at www.tbvintage.com.

Tamarkin & Bertoldi’s two live auctions are held in the spring and fall, in Woodbridge, Conn. The auction catalogs are used worldwide as a reference tool and price guide, and are an excellent way to keep up with current pricing and trends. The fully illustrated, color catalog no. 28 is available upon request.

LOS ANGELES – Profiles in History, run by Joe Maddalena, has announced the clashing of heroes and villains at the upcoming Treasures from the Hollywood Vaults auction in late July. The items are from the esteemed Dreier Collection and will be auctioned off on July 28. The Animation Auction will be July 29 and the Treasures from the Hollywood Vaults auction has been moved to July 30-31.

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding.

The first iconic hero costume is Michael Keaton’s complete Batman costume from Batman Returns. This impressive costume includes the original “armored” rubber bodysuit, boots, gauntlet gloves with serrated “fins,” rubberized cape, and of course the iconic Batman cowl. The entire costume is mounted on a custom display with a life cast of Michael Keaton and stands over 6 feet tall. This is a rare costume from this film, which is now considered a classic in the superhero genre. It is expected to fetch $30,000-$50,000.

While not from the same film but still a villain of Batman, a signature Jim Carrey Riddler question mark costume from Batman Forever. The costume includes the green bowler hat with a large question mark motif on front. The costume is completed by the Riddler’s signature gold 38-inch cane with a rubber question mark handle. This highly identifiable character ensemble is an important landmark in the Riddler’s modern incarnation. It is expected to fetch $20,000-$30,000.

The Peter Mayhew original Chewbacca head from Star Wars is the finest full costume headpiece of Chewbacca from the original trilogy in private hands. It consists of a screen-used cowl hairpiece, which encompasses the entire head, and a period-made Stuart Freeborn facial appliance. Included are signed photographs by Stuart Freeborn and Peter Mayhew. It is expected to fetch $60,000-$80,000.

From X-Men, a signature Wolverine black leather battlesuit. The familiar fine black leather jumpsuit is subtly adorned with metallic copper and yellow-colored trimmings. The X-Men first don their combat suits to battle Magneto and the Brotherhood in the final Statue of Liberty sequence. It comes with a 20th Century Fox certificate of authenticity. It is expected to fetch $30,000-$50,000. From X2: X-Men United, are Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine hero claws. It is the only hero set released by the studio. The claws, when worn, give the illusion that they are razor sharp blades protruding from the tops of the wearer’s hands by virtue of an angled handle that rests flush against the upper palm of the hand. The claws come with peerless provenance and paperwork and are expected to fetch $20,000-$30,000.

A worthy adversary for the Wolverine items is a signature Ian McKellen/Magneto costume also from X-Men. The costume consists of a gray custom jacket with integral red-lined cape, matching gray pants, two fiberglass two-piece helmets, one of which is the hero helmet. The costume includes a 20th Century Fox certificate of authenticity. It is expected to fetch $20,000-$30,000.

Other heroes and villains include, a complete Cylon costume from Battlestar Galactica, $40,000–$60,000; Russell Crowe/Maximus iconic chest armor from Gladiator, $15,000–$20,000; a complete hero Spartan soldier costume and shield from 300, $8,000–$12,000; a complete Stormtrooper tour costume from Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, $6,000-$8,000; Angelina Jolie/Lara Croft jacket from Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, $2,000–$3,000; Patrick Stewart/Jean Luc Picard season one Starfleet uniform from Star Trek: The Next Generation, $6,000-$8,000; Picard’s “Enterprise-E” command chair from the Star Trek: The Next Generation films, including First Contact, Insurrection and Nemesis, $20,000-$30,000.

Iconic hero costumes from Superman: The Movie, including the complete Christopher Reeve Superman costume consisting of a blue and red long-sleeve stretch jersey leotard, with the trademark Superman “S” emblazoned on the chest (estimated at $60,000–$80,000), and the complete Marlon Brando/Jor-El costume in his memorable role as the father of Superman (estimated at $60,000–$80,000).

PASADENA, Calif. – When Col. Theodore Roosevelt’s Rough Riders charged up San Juan Hill in a decisive battle of the Spanish-American War, they wielded Colt “Peacemaker” revolvers . One of these legendary Colt 45s—actually carried into that battle by an American soldier—will be sold by John Moran Auctioneers on July 24.

LiveAuctioneers.com will provide Internet live bidding for the antiques and fine art auction, which will begin at 3 p.m. PDT.

The Colt Single Action Army revolver was carried in the Battle of San Juan Hill on July 1, 1898 by Sgt. Albert P. Wright, Regimental Color Sergeant of Roosevelt’s 1st U.S. Volunteer Cavalry, better known as the Rough Riders.

Originally from Yuma, Ariz., Wright served with Roosevelt in Cuba from May 1, 1898 until September 1898, when the regiment was mustered out.

Wright kept the revolver after the war, and it then passed to Herbert D. Lore, proprietor of the Painted Desert Inn and Lore Trading Post in the Four Corners region. Handed down in the Lore family by descent, the revolver remains in as-found condition, and is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Colt Archive Properties.

The certificate from Colt states that that this gun was originally sold to the United States government and delivered to the U.S. Government Inspector at the Colt plant on Feb. 17, 1891. It was one of 200 Single Action Army revolvers in the shipment. Its serial number is 138236.

Moran’s estimates the gun will bring $7,000-$9,000.

The July 24 auction comes on the heels of Moran’s record-shattering June sale of a Navajo chief’s blanket for $1.8 million, by far the highest price achieved at auction for a Native American textile.

For details call John Moran Auctioneers Inc. at 626-793-1833 or email info@johnmoran.com.

WAYNE, Pa. – Over 470 lots comprising a diverse and interesting worldwide collection of items—to include signed prints by Louis Icart, antique clocks and pocket watches, Chinese scrolls, other Asian objects, art glass vases and more—will be sold in an Internet-only auction already online and ending July 19 at 10:30 a.m. EDT by Gordon S. Converse & Co.

Bidders may participate right now LiveAuctioneers.com/catalog/30670. Images of all the lots have been posted, along with high and low estimates.

“There are some real bargains in this auction,” said Gordon Converse. “Many items—quality items, great gift items—carry estimates of less than $100.”

The Icart prints are sure to be a hit with collectors. Both are signed in pencil, framed, numbered and dated (1924). One is an oval form print, titled Old Yarn, and measures 17 inches by 21 inches (est. $1,000-$1,250). The other is a rectangular form print, framed and masked with a sight of 18 3/4 inches by 22 1/2 inches. Titled The Poet, the print should realize $1,000-$1,500.

Louis Justin Laurent Icart was born in Toulouse, France in 1890 and died in Paris in 1950. He lived in New York City in the 1920s, where he became known for his Art Deco color etchings of glamorous women. Also in the auction is an oil on board by Danish artist Valdemar Thomsen (1897-1957), of a snow-covered landscape. The signed, framed work should hit $400.

Antique Chinese scrolls will include three lots—in quantities of six, eight and nine scrolls—have estimates of $1,000-$2,000 each. The nine scrolls measure about 34 inches by 16 inches each; the six scrolls, in polychrome watercolors, are 33 inches by 17 inches each; and the eight scrolls are in watercolor, same size as the six scrolls. Single scrolls will also be available.

One of the headliners of the clocks, watches and timepieces category is a sphinx-shape mantel clock, 14 1/2 inches, expected to bring $1,500-$3,000. Also offered will be an open faced pocket watch with a 14-karat white gold case made by the Howard company, with a 17-jewel movement (est. $300-$400); and an open faced, gold filled pocket watch with a porcelain dial signed “Elgin” and the 21-jewel engraved movement signed “Father Time” (est. $80-$150).

Other timepieces will include a Swiss watch by Nardin in a gold and black enameled hunting case, with a 15- or 13-jewel stem wind lever set bar lever movement, in running shape; a clock mounted in what looks like a tiny, old-time refrigerator, with four matching salt and pepper shakers (8 1/2 inches tall); and a nonfunctioning (but very convincing) plate in the form of a clock dial (12 1/4 inches diameter), signed Ralph Lauren and marked “Wedgwood Bone China.”

Asian objects will feature a Chinese hollow carved Qing Dynasty Hetian jade pendant with birds and flowers (est. $400-$600); a late 18th/early 19th century blue and white glazed Chinese charger (est. $300-$500); a hollow cast bronze Chinese Buddha figure, 14 inches tall (est. $300-$400); and sealed Chinese envelope art, showing a mountain scene (est. $400-$500).

Additional offerings from the Asian category include a Chinese watercolor rendering with cover, dated 1997 and measuring 134 cm by 68 cm; a Chinese watercolor book, measuring 6 3/4 inches by 12 1/2 inches when closed; a late 18th/early 19th century Chinese blue and white porcelain glazed charger, 17 1/2 inches in diameter; a Chinese oil painting of a nude girl, 24 inches by 36 inches, signed; and a Chinese Hetian white jade bangle, outside diameter 3 inches.

Art glass pieces will feature a goblet (or vase) in blue, 7 inches tall (est. $60-$150); and a 3 3/4-inch bud vase of glass in the form of an apple, signed Kosta. Other items of note include a bronze and marble desk set, 8 inches wide (est. $100-$200); a cast-iron unpainted toy dirigible (est. $250-$350); and a carved, gold leaf decorated Baroque-style mirror (45 1/2 inches by 28 inches). Hundreds of other decorative accessories will also cross the block.

Gordon S. Converse & Co. is always accepting quality consignments. To consign an item, an estate or a collection, phone 610-722-9004 or email Gordon@ConverseClocks.com.

LANTANA, Fla. – With some seriously heavy completion in an area served by many auction houses, M.G. Neely Auction has become a new “favorite” for auction-goers and consignors who’ve discovered this small but friendly gallery in Palm Beach County, Florida. The company’s next auction, which is slated for July 22, 2012, is its largest to date, with 325 lots of antiques, modern and mid-century pieces. The sale will commence at 12 noon Eastern Time and will feature Internet live bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com.

As a rule, M.G. Neely auctions offers an eclectic mix of old and new, and the upcoming summer sale is no exception. “Whether you want to add to your collection of military garb, put a Pac Man machine in your rec room, redecorate your living room, or add an artwork or antique to your collection, you’ll be sure to find something in this catalog that you simply must have,” said owner Mark Neely.

Highlights in the area of artwork include a rare, complete (15-piece) lithograph series by Salvador Dali titled Les Floralies, artist proofs by Alexander Calder and Romero Britto, and original paintings by Yankel Ginzberg, Max Papart, Jovan Obican, and Stanley Massey Arthurs. Also, the sale includes a vast array of sculpture by such artists as Curtis Jere, Benazzi Foresto, Angelo Brasso, Paul Wegner, Charles Bragg and others.

For the decorators, the catalog shifts from chic, contemporary furnishings by DIA and Nicole Miller to mid-century modern designs by Stendig, Salterini and Herman Miller, followed by a beautiful collection of antique pieces dating back to the 17th century.

Collectors will find glass and porcelain treasures by Meissen, Hutschenreuther, Kosta, Cendese and Seguso.

Also in the mix are musical instruments, such as a circa-1910 player piano and a very rare 1860s melodeon. The auction will conclude with a selection of military artifacts, including a WWI French Calgary sword and U.S. Civil war epaulets.

Mark Neely had already been in the antiques trade for more than 30 years when he decided to get his auctioneer’s license and open his own gallery in late 2010. The business has been thriving ever since. Though perhaps a bit less conventional than most gallery operators, Neely maintains his success can be credited to a combination of several things: “down-to-earth realism in a precarious marketplace, professional presentation with thorough research, provenance and disclosure, superior customer service, a lot of hard work, and a sense of humor.”

Neely has become known for his one-liners and quips while auctioneering. According to a staff member, “One telephone bidder, hearing the audience in the background, asked if we were an auction house or a comedy club and said he would make a point to attend next time.” Neely said he hopes to add a video feature to future sales “so people on the Internet can see what goes on,” both for a sense of being there and for entertainment value.

Neely very rarely puts reserves on his lots and promises the same for the July 22 and all future sales. For additional information on any lot in the sale, contact M.G. Neely Auction at 561-585-8511 or email mark@neelyauction.com.
