Signed documents from Marilyn Monroe, Lincoln, and Einstein cross the block at University Archives April 10

WILTON, Conn. – A vintage photograph of Marilyn Monroe taken circa 1947 and signed by the budding starlet, a 1935 two-page typewritten letter signed by Albert Einstein, and a handsome Civil War-dated military commission signed by Abraham Lincoln are just a few of the top lots at University Archives‘ Wednesday, April 10 sale. The catalog is now available for bidding and review at LiveAuctioneers.

Marilyn Monroe (1926-1962) posed for this image around 1947, when she adopted her stage name and shed her birth name of Norma Jeane Mortenson. It also features an early ‘Marilyn Monroe’ signature that University Archives states is the earliest example known. PSA/DNA graded 10, the print has it all: photo quality, signature quality, and image composition. It has an estimate of $28,000-$35,000.

University Archives continues to bring interesting Albert Einstein correspondence to the market. This time it’s a two-page typewritten letter to friend and fellow physicist Cornelius Lanczos. In it, Einstein describes difficulties he had encountered when attempting to articulate the theory of general relativity through useful equations, challenges which he said “had cooled my confidence below the freezing point.” The letter carries an estimate of $24,000-$30,000.

A Civil War-dated military commission signed by President Abraham Lincoln and co-signed by Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, dated July 1864, promoted Maryland-born career army officer Robert H. K. Whiteley. He had declined a command in the Confederate Army at the outset of the war, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Ordnance Department, tasked with overseeing Union munitions at Pittsburgh. The framed commission is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

Artist and inventor Samuel Morse spent years of his life defending (in court and in the court of public opinion) his claim that he had developed the telegraph independently. In this letter, dated November 11, 1861 and addressed to A.J. Goodman, Esq., Morse describes the origins of the telegraph. Morse had strenuously defended his intellectual property rights for the telegraph for 25 years prior to writing the letter. It is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

SUDBURY, Mass. – Rare prints from the remarkable collection amassed by Winfield Robbins (1841-1910) of Arlington, Massachusetts came for sale at Tremont Auctions on February 25. During his travels to Europe, Robbins collected some 150,000 prints that he later left to his hometown. After recent approval was given to deaccession, selections from this extensive collection will be offered by Tremont Auctions in upcoming sales.

The financial highlight was a mezzotint of one of the so-called ‘Four Indian Kings,’ the native American chiefs that visited London in 1710. Based on a series of official portraits commissioned by Queen Anne from the Anglo-Dutch artist John Verelst (1648-1734), these are considered the earliest known surviving portraits from life of the native people of North America.

This example, from a series by John Faber the Elder, is titled On Nee Yeath Tow No Riow or King John of Canajoharie. He was one of three Mohawk chiefs from the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) alliance and one Mohican from the Algonquin nations who were received in London as diplomats and were transported through the streets of the city to St. James Palace in royal carriages. The print was expected to bring $2,000-$3,000, but sold at a muscular $29,000 ($36,830 with buyer’s premium).

Two other mezzotints from the series, including Tee Yee Neen Ho Ga Row, Emperour of the Six Nations engraved by John Simon and Coning vande Maquas alias Coning Brant engraved by Peter Schenk the Elder, were sold by the auction house in August. They made $12,000 and $16,000, respectively.

The portrait of the venerable Congregational minister Cotton Mather, published by Peter Pelham in Boston in 1727, is considered the first American mezzotint. Pelham was already regarded as an accomplished engraver and artist when he arrived in Massachusetts from London, but Mather was his first subject on American soil. Though he posed for Pelham’s painted study (which is part of the collections at the American Antiquarian Society), the minister would not live to see the final mezzotint as he died four months before the print’s publication. The copy here sold for $4,200 ($5,334), well above its estimate of $400-$600. Another example sold at Sotheby’s New York in 2021 for $4,000.

A portrait of Albert Einstein by German Jewish artist Hermann Struck (1876-1944) earned $4,600 ($5,842 with buyer’s premium). A specialist in etchings, Struck made a number of portraits of Einstein as well as other great minds of his generation including Wilde, Nietzsche, Freud, and Ibsen, but this relatively youthful image is thought to be the earliest. Published around the time the experimental confirmation of the theory of relativity in November 1919 had made front-page news across the world, it is perhaps the earliest attempt to commercialize an artistic image of Einstein. Numbered 20 of 150, this is one of the 50 in the edition also signed and dated 1923 by Einstein himself in pencil at the lower right.

Some of the day’s strongest prices were for Japanese woodblock prints. These included an 1892 album featuring a complete set of the 36 Ghosts series by the Meiji master Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. Bound in silk brocade covers, this copy, estimated at $5,000-$7,000 but sold at $16,000 ($20,320 with buyer’s premium), includes a title page and the publisher’s Imperial commendation page. Thirty-Six New Forms of Ghosts was the last major woodblock print series by Yoshitoshi. At the end of his life he revisited the popular tales of ghosts, demons, and the supernatural from Japanese folklore that he had drawn previously in his twenties. Pushing the medium of the woodblock print to its limits, he used students to assist in the carving of 12 different color blocks for each design. It was published in parts between 1889 and 1892 by Sasaki Toyokichi and again by Matsuki Heikichi in 1902.

The complete set of Thirty-two Aspects of Customs & Manners (Fuzoku sanjuniso) by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi hammered for $13,000 ($16,510 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $2,000-$3,000. This series, published in 1888, amounts to a survey of bijin (female beauties) of different backgrounds and occupations from the reactionary Kansei era (1789-1800) to the more open Meiji restoration (1860-1912). The word for ‘Aspect’ or ‘Type’ or ‘Appearance’ (sô) had been famously used by earlier artists such as Utamaro and Kunisada. A technical term borrowed from physiognomists who analyzed character on the basis of physical facial features, it could also mean ‘flower.’

WILTON, Conn. — More Albert Einstein-signed correspondence emerges from private collections via University Archives on Wednesday, February 21 at the Rare Signed Manuscripts Books Photos Relics sale now open for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

In addition, a signed performance release from NeXT Computer founder Steve Jobs and a 1958 Connecticut drivers license for Marilyn Monroe while she was married to playwright Arthur Miller are top anticipated lots.

A 1933 ALS (autographed letter, signed) from Albert Einstein (1879-1955) to his schizophrenic son Eduard documents the famed scientist’s flight from Belgium to England as he awaited his final move to Princeton, New Jersey to take a post at the Institute for Advanced Study. Einstein matter-of-factly describes his escape from mainland Europe because “there were plans for my assassination.” As an enemy of the newly empowered National Socialists in Germany, Einstein had received death threats and had been named on Nazi bounty lists. He referenced his son’s mental health with “I hope you are in a steady mood with no significant irritations.” The ALS is the top-estimated lot of the sale at $30,000-$40,000.

A more scientific relic is an undated Einstein one-page autograph manuscript in German comprising more than 170 words and seven lines of equations relating to the development of his United Field Theory. It also carries a $30,000-$40,000 estimate.

In 1956, Hollywood motion picture star Marilyn Monroe embarked on her third and final marriage, this time to playwright Arthur Miller. Having only recently divorced New York Yankees star Joe DiMaggio, the marriage was greeted with a combination of disdain and disbelief in the mass media, with Variety calling the union “Egghead Weds Hourglass.”

This 1958 Connecticut drivers license lists the holder as “M M Miller” residing at Tophet Road in Roxbury, with a bold Marilyn Monroe Miller signature in blue ball-point pen ink. It is estimated at $30,000-$40,000.

Steve Jobs (1955-2011) is best remembered today as the co-founder of Apple Computer, who was famously ousted in a 1985 power struggle with CEO John Sculley just a year after the launch of the Macintosh. Jobs went on to found NeXT, a computer technology firm that created what would become MacOS X as well as co-found the animated motion picture studio Pixar. Jobs returned to Apple in 1997 where he would develop the iPod, iPhone, and iPad before succumbing to pancreatic cancer at age 56.

In 1988, Jobs held an east coast unveiling of the new NeXT platform and operating system at Boston Symphony Hall on November 30. As part of the appearance, Jobs signed a release allowing for the use of his appearance in audio form. Jobs signatures from this period are notoriously difficult to find, particularly in the steven p. jobs small-case cursive format. The release is PSA graded Gem Mint 10 and is estimated at $30,000-$40,000.

BERKELEY, Calif. – PBA Galleries kicks off its first Rare Books & Manuscripts sale of 2024 on Thursday, February 8 with a 97-lot collection of items ranging from early Albert Einstein publications to probably the finest illustrated collection of mid-19th century Mississippi River views ever created. Henry Lewis (1819–1904) was born in England but moved to the United States in 1833 and soon headed for St. Louis, where he would begin a lifelong fascination with the great and powerful Mississippi River. His artistic skills were honed as a scenery painter at the St. Louis Theater, but he was soon sketching hundreds of images of life in and around St. Louis and the river. He became known for creating immense paintings of river scenes 12 feet tall and more than 1,000 feet in length that would be slowly unrolled before adoring audiences, in an early form of pre-film entertainment.

Unfortunately, none of his huge movie-like panoramas survive, but he did manage to get one volume of his smaller illustrations published: Das Illustrirte Mississippithal, a volume in both English and German with a total of 80 color lithographed plates. PBA’s copy has had expert restoration performed on it, making it a prime example of how Lewis spent the summers of 1846 and 1847, floating down the entire course of the Mississippi River. The book is estimated at $50,000-$80,000.

The Dun Emer Press and Cuala Press were early speciality publishing houses set up and run by the family members of W. B. Yeats. This collection of Dun Emer and Cuala first editions “constitutes one of the most important private presses of the 20th century – if not of the fine press movement as a whole,” as noted by PBA. The publishing houses are described as having been “at the confluence of the Irish Literary Revival and the Arts & Crafts Movement, [when] the early 20th century witnessed the germination and flowering of the modern Irish nation.” The set of first editions, some never opened, is estimated at $40,000-$60,000.

Three papers written by Albert Einstein (1879-1955) that constitute the most important parts of his research — including winning the Nobel Prize for one – come to market at PBA. Collected in Annalen der Physik, Folge Vierte, Band 17 and published in 1905, the papers cover “the photon, atom, and relativity … Einstein‘s photon paper forms the basis of the quantum paradigm, and he was awarded the Nobel Prize for this paper; his paper researching Brownian Motion established the reality of the atom (and within the next year he established the atom‘s actual size); and his paper on relativity reformulated the nature of space and time – directly leading to the world‘s most famous equation, E = mc², and ultimately to a new theory of gravity (General Relativity).” The volume carries an estimate of $20,000-$30,000.

David Roberts (1796–1864) was an English illustrator who, in partnership with Belgian stone lithographer and colorist Louis Haghe (1806-1885), created what is today considered the most acclaimed views of Egypt of the mid-19th century. Egypt and Nubia from Drawings Made on the Spot was published between 1846 and 1849 and contains 121 duotone lithographs of Giza, Karnac, and Luxor. The folio of three volumes rebound into two is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

LONDON – Leading the Autographs and Manuscripts sale at Chiswick Auctions on October 10 was a promotional photograph of The Beatles. Not only was it signed in blue and red ballpoint inks by all four members of the band, it was additionally inscribed by Ringo (Geoff, Best wishes from the Beatles) and George (To Geoff, Best wishes). The signatures were obtained for the vendor by his brother, who, in 1964, worked as an assistant director on A Hard Day’s Night at Twickenham Studios. He includes his recollections of his meetings with the Fab Four, including after-hours phone calls from Paul McCartney to discuss the progress of the movie. Estimated at £5,000-£7,000, it made a cool £18,000 or $21,900 (£22,500 or $27,300 including buyer’s premium).

There was also strong competition for a possibly unique pair of portrait photographs of the young Edward VIII. It was thought they were once owned by the English socialite Freda Dudley Ward, who had a long affair with the then-Prince of Wales.

The photographs, signed by the Bassano studio of London with photographer’s pencil marks along the margins, show the prince in mirror-like head and shoulders profile poses. Each image is signed and dated E.1919 on the front and David, Aug 1919 on the verso. They were consigned by a vendor whose grandmother was Freda Dudley Ward’s personal maid in the 1920s. Offered together with a full-length photograph of Freda Dudley Ward (1894-1983) holding her two Yorkshire terriers with an estimate of £1,000-£1,500, they took £8,500 or $10,300 (£10,625 or $12,900 with buyer’s premium).

Although she married Dudley Ward in 1913, Freda had a relationship with Edward from 1918 until 1929. She was supplanted in his affections, first by Thelma Furness (1904-70) and then by Wallis Simpson.

A collection of correspondence penned by giants of the 20th century to an Oxford academic raised more than £20,000 ($24,300) for charity. The 22 letters from people including Albert Einstein, Winston Churchill, Anthony Eden, Charles De Gaulle and Chiang Kai-shek were recently given by the family of Sir William David Ross (1877-1971) to an Oxfam store in west London.

Ross, a Scottish philosopher, translator and civil servant was provost of Oriel College, Oxford from 1929-47, and vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford from 1941-44. Sitting on many governmental committees, his address book included many members of the great and the good of 20th-century society.

One of two letters to Ross from Albert Einstein was written (in German) from Cromer in Norfolk on October 1, 1933. At the time, Einstein and his wife Elsa, who had fled from Germany when Hitler came to power, was receiving brief refuge in the U.K. before moving to the U.S. on October 17, 1933. Concerned for the well-being of a colleague, he wrote: “Professor Zangger at the University of Zurich, asked me to make you aware of Prof. Stenzel in Kiel, who lost his position. He researches the history of science in ancient Greece and he is not in the position to contact you from Germany. The question is if there is a possibility to invite this gentleman to England or America as a guest lecturer.” Einstein suggests Ross contact Zangger directly “especially as I will be soon travelling to America (Princeton)”. Professor Julius Stenzel, a classical philologist and philosopher, was a member of a disciplinary committee that had expelled some Nazi students from the university in 1930. In 1933, he was transferred to the University of Halle, where he died two years later.

WILTON, Conn. — Historical document experts University Archives returns with another collection of significant, signed items in its Rare Autographs, Manuscripts, Books & Sports sale on Wednesday, October 18. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale is grouped by category, leading off with American presidents and first ladies. Interestingly, one of the top lots in the sale is a multi-page letter from First Lady Martha Washington (1731-1802) to her niece Fanny Bassett, discussing recent and upcoming travel plans. As noted by University Auctions, “Letters by Martha Washington are extremely rare. Only a very few survive today in the private sector. Even more scarce are the examples which mention her husband, which our first First Lady does three times in this letter.” Silked and with minor paper loss, the artifact is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Albert Einstein (1879-1955)-signed correspondence is always popular at auction, and this sale includes a relatively uncommon letter written in English (most are in German). Peter Stuyvesant (1592-1672) served as the final Dutch Director-General of the New Netherland colony, today known as New York. In this document, he grants approximately 10,000 square feet of sheep pasture to Cornelis van Ruijven. At the time, the colony was located in what is now lower Manhattan, and was protected by a wall to prevent recurring raids on the populace. The wall safeguarded the settlers but also severely limited the amount of available land. Stuyvesant’s grant could be considered incredibly generous, given the time and circumstances. Fully authenticated and documented in numerous historical books, the grant is estimated at $20,000-$30,000.

Though largely forgotten today, Jewish financier Haym Salomon was one of a handful of Americans who helped the young Republic survive raging inflation in the immediate postwar period by loaning money and offering guarantees to the nascent government. His signature is considered exceedingly rare, with University Archives noting fewer than 10 examples exist. This check made out to Salomon and endorsed by him is estimated at $18,000-$20,000.

Hand-written lyrics to important and historic songs are always in high demand, and this sale has an amazing example: Subterranean Homesick Blues, written in Bob Dylan’s own hand and accompanied with a certificate of authenticity signed by Dylan’s manager. The song is widely cited by musicians as a turning point in the burgeoning folk rock movement of 1965 and beyond. The lot carries an estimate of $40,000-$50,000.

Few names are held in higher esteem in the scientific community than Albert Einstein, the father of the theory of relativity. A 1920 letter in German, from Einstein to astronomer Dr. Friedrich Simon Archenhold, discusses his then-new theory, which Einstein had previously presented at Arcchenhold’s observatory in 1915. The letter is accompanied by an authenticity certification and is estimated at $28,000-$35,000.

One of the few known documents to contain autographs from Abraham Lincoln and Jefferson Davis, opposing presidents during the Civil War, is a circa 1847-48 autograph book commemorating the 30th United States Congress. This amazing lot contains signatures of five U.S. Presidents and then-Congressman Abraham Lincoln, as well as that of the man who represents a world-class trivia question.

David Rice Atchison was a Democratic senator from Missouri who happened to hold the post of president pro tempore on Sunday, March 4, 1849. Pedants and sticklers have made the case that, technically, due to an unlikely chain of circumstances that is too long to detail here, Atchison was acting president of the United States from March 4-5.

Atchison never advanced this claim, and pretty much every credible scholar and historian has debunked it. Nonetheless, his gravestone declares him as having been ‘President of the United States for One Day,’ and the inclusion of his signature in this album adds cache. It is estimated at $20,000-$24,000.

Gallery Report: Pegge Hopper painting lent Hawaiian vibe to Andrew Jones sale

 

ATLANTA – At the beginning of the month, ACN columnist Ken Hall collects and presents the most interesting auction results from the United States and the world at large. His Gallery Report for August 2023 features many standout sales. All prices quoted include the buyer’s premium, except where noted.

Pegge Hopper painting, $23,750, Andrew Jones Auctions

A 1984 acrylic on canvas by Pegge Hopper (American, b. 1936-), titled Three Strand Ilima, sold for $23,750 at a Design for the Home & Garden auction held June 21 by Andrew Jones Auctions in Los Angeles. Also, a limestone portrait bust of an Egyptian pharaoh on a white metal pedestal went for $52,500, and a portrait of a Moor in traditional robes by a follower of Horace Vernet (French, 1789-1863) brought $16,250.

1909 15-cent U.S. stamp, $1,080, Ahlers & Ogletree

A 1909 15-cent U.S. stamp (Scott #366) on bluish paper, mint and hinged, in fine condition, sold for $1,080 at a U.S. & World Stamps auction held July 13 by Ahlers & Ogletree in Atlanta. Also, an 1863 10-cent Confederate States of America stamp (Scott #10), blue, graded extremely fine, attained $1,020; a collection of British and Australian 1st issue stamps garnered $2,700; and an 1867 3-cent U.S. stamp (Scott #79), rose colored, in average condition, went for $960.

Sterling silver parade saddle, $50,820, Brian Lebel’s and Morphy Auctions

A circa-1930s Edward H. Bohlin sterling silver parade saddle with leather and silver carving sold for $50,820 at Brian Lebel’s 33rd annual Cody Old West Show & Auction, held June 23-25 in association with Morphy Auctions at the Community Convention Center in Santa Fe, N.M. Also, a two-page  Nov. 14, 1904-dated Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid pictorial ‘wanted’ poster brought $19,965, and a painting by Will James (1892-1942) of a cowboy roping a steer lassoed $36,300.

Gold and diamond evening clutch, $20,160, Doyle

A two-color gold and diamond evening clutch sold for $20,160 at a Fine Jewelry & Luxury Handbags auction held July 20 by Doyle in New York City. Also, an antique platinum, gold and diamond crossover ring slipped onto a new finger for $16,380; a wide gold and diamond bracelet finished at $11,970; a French gold, star sapphire and diamond clip brooch hit $9,450; and a Patek Philippe gentleman’s gold Gondolo wristwatch (ref. 1488) found a new owner for $7,560.

Tribal door carving, $20,000, Clars Auction Gallery

A dynamic figural door made in Toradia, Sulawesi Island, centering a monkey carved in high relief, sold for $20,000 at a Tribal Arts, Interiors, Art & Jewelry auction held July 14 by Clars Auction Gallery in Oakland, Calif. Also, a painting by Arthur Hill Gilbert (American, 1894-1970), titled Monterey Oaks, brought $8,750; and a Bakota reliquary from Gabon, overall 22 ½in including stand, left the room for $8,750.

Howard Terpning painting, $2.36 million, Coeur d’Alene Art Auction

A 2008 painting by Howard Terpning titled Paper That Talks Two Ways – The Treaty Signing sold for $2.36 million at the Coeur d’Alene Art Auction held July 15 in Reno, Nev. It was a record price for a work by the artist. Also, Maynard Dixon’s The Pony Boy commanded $2.13 million, also a record for the artist; Gerald Curtis Delano’s Evening settled at $786,500; and William Herbert Dunton’s A Race for the Chuckwagon ($786,500) and Two Braves ($574,750) both did well.

Albert Einstein manuscript, $43,750, RR Auction

A one-page scientific working manuscript with equations handwritten and signed by the legendary physicist Albert Einstein sold for $43,750 in an online Fine Autographs and Artifacts auction held June 23-July 12 by RR Auction, based in Boston. Also, the Dr. Martin Breckstein presidential collection of 41 autographs, spanning Washington to Clinton, went for $47,768; and a Napoleon document from 1812, signed amid the disastrous Russian campaign, changed hands for $39,214.

Chinese porcelain vase, $20,910, Neue Auctions

A 17in-tall Chinese blue and white porcelain vase, probably early 20th century, sold for $20,910 in an online-only Fine Art & Antiques auction held June 24 by Neue Auctions in Beachwood, Ohio. Also, a pair of late 19th-century Aesthetic Movement leaded glass windows realized $7,995, and an early 20th-century carved and painted carousel giraffe, restored and attributed to Herschell-Spillman, sauntered away for $7,380.

Edison electric pen, $12,800, Nye & Company Auctioneers

A late 1800s Edison electric pen, No. 8263 on wheel, including stand, wire and stencil, sold for $12,800 at a Chic and Antique Estate Treasures auction held April 26-28 by Nye & Company Auctioneers in Bloomfield, N.J. Also, a circa-1440 framed portion of a leaf from the Sloan-Krech copy of the Catholicon, published by Gutenberg in 1459, secured $7,680; and a 19th- or 20th-century Louis XVI-style chinoiserie-decorated chest rose to $3,520.

Lalique chandelier, $14,080, Nadeau’s Auction Gallery

A Lalique Champs-Elysee chandelier sold for $14,080 at a Spring Outdoor, Mid-Century, Art and Furnishings auction held June 10 by Nadeau’s Auction Gallery in Windsor, Conn. Also, a painting titled End of Night by Arpana Caur (Indian, b. 1954-) achieved $7,680; a pair of Charles and Ray Eames Potato Chip chairs settled at $7,680; an Eames 670 lounge chair and rosewood ottoman went for $5,120; and a gilt metal cut glass and ruby glass eight-light chandelier attained $9,840.

Babe Ruth 1916 rookie card, $645,000, Heritage Auctions

Babe Ruth’s 1916 Famous & Barr Co. rookie baseball card, graded PSA Very Good / Excellent 4, sold for $645,000 at a Summer Sports Card Catalog Auction held July 14-15 by Heritage Auctions in Dallas. Also, another Ruth card, the 1917 E135 Collins-McCarthy example, graded PSA Very Good 3, realized $144,000; a 1952 Mickey Mantle Topps card, graded PSA Excellent 5, made $162,000; and a signed 1952 Bowman Mickey Mantle card brought $99,000.

Jean-Baptiste Corot painting, $120,000, Thomaston Place Auction Galleries

A painting by the French Impressionist Jean-Baptiste Corot, titled Le Chariot d’Arras, sold for $120,000 at a July Splendor Sale held July 7-9 by Thomaston Place Art Galleries in Thomaston, Maine. Also, an untitled painting by Etel Adnan brought $68,750; a folk-art painting by Bill Traylor secured $51,000; an inscribed original watercolor remarque by Andrew Wyeth on a book endpaper from Christina’s World earned $34,375; and a Hans Wegner Papa Bear chair finished at $19,200.

Harry Houdini poster, $45,600, Potter & Potter Auctions

A 1911 poster colloquially known as the Houdini for President poster sold for $45,600 at a Summer Magic Auction held June 17 by Potter & Potter Auctions in Chicago. Also, a Ouija prediction watch magic apparatus changed hands for $21,600; a circa-1902 German Harry Houdini poster attained $36,000; a Thurston poster from 1928 achieved $5,280; a ringing alarm clock production stand earned $13,200; and a butterfly silk production illusion by Jon Martin made $9,000.

The Legend of Zelda, $7,188, Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers

A 1989 copy of The Legend of Zelda, a video game for the Nintendo Entertainment System, factory-sealed and graded CGC 9.2, sold for $7,188 at a Comics, Toys & Video Games auction held May 6 by Bruneau & Co. Auctioneers in Cranston, R.I. Also, a copy of Science Comics #1 (Feb. 1940, Fox Features Syndicate), with a cover by George Tuska, secured $6,250; and a copy of Captain America Comics #36 (March 1944, Timely Comics), graded CGC 1.5, brought $4,000.

 

 Va. /N.C. corner cupboard, $96,000, Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates

A Roanoke River Basin (Va./N.C.) carved walnut corner cupboard sold for $96,000 at a Premier Americana Auction held June 15-17 by Jeffrey S. Evans & Associates in Mt. Crawford, Va. Also, a pair of emerald green Boston & Sandwich Glass Co. notch-cut and pressed vases climbed to $10,800; a Yosemite landscape painting by Thomas Hill (British and American, 1829-1908) settled at $30,000; and a Staffordshire platter bearing the arms of Pennsylvania found a new home for $15,600.

Sculpture after Troubetzkoy, $18,750, John Moran Auctioneers

A bronze sculpture after Prince Paul Troubetzkoy (1866-1938), titled Danseuse Jambe Droite Levee (Lady Constance Stewart Richardson), 1921, sold for $18,750 at a ReDesign Sale held July 11 by John Moran Auctioneers in Los Angeles. Also, Shane Guffogg’s (b. 1962-) A Second from Now, from 1999, realized $2,000; two Hollywood Regency gilt bronze and glass nesting tables brought $2,000; and a 1961 Leica single-stroke 33mm Rangefinder camera captured $2,813.

2007 4GB iPhone, $190,373, LCG Auctions

A factory-sealed 4GB original 2007 iPhone sold for $190,373 at a Summer Premier Auction held in July by LCG Auctions in Baton Rouge, La. It was the highest price ever paid at auction for an iPhone. Three other 2007 iPhones – an 8GB, a 16GB and an 8GB European version – also sold, with all four lots combining for $264,962. Also, a factory-sealed 1984 Transformers: Megatron AFA 85 made $57,596, and a 1978 Star Wars: vinyl cape Jawa AFA 85 brought $22,206.

George Hughes cover art, $103,700, Case Auctions

A summer beach scene created by artist George E. Hughes (1907-1990) and used as the cover illustration for the Aug. 2, 1952 issue of the Saturday Evening Post sold for $103,700 at a Summer Auction held July 8-9 by Case Auctions in Knoxville, Tenn. Also, an Andrew Clemens sand art bottle with a flag motif achieved $35,600; a Herter Brothers signed easel changed hands for $48,640; and an earthenware Great Road jug attributed to Thomas J. Myers (Smyth County, Va.) earned $29,280.
