Tiffany, Steuben, and Lalique dominate the Art Nouveau collection at Heritage April 18

Gallé mold-blown cameo glass Calla Lily vase, estimated at $40,000-$60,000 at Heritage.

DALLAS — An amazing array of Tiffany Studios, Steuben, and Lalique glass dominates the 455 lots in the Pursuit of Beauty: Art Nouveau, Deco & Glass sale at Heritage Auctions on Thursday, April 18. The catalog is now available for review and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

In a show of force, examples of Tiffany Studios confections make up an amazing 47 lots in the sale, with the options mostly split between lamps and favrile glass. The sale’s top-estimated lot is a circa-1910 Tiffany Studios Trumpet Creeper chandelier. Made of leaded glass and patinated bronze, it was last sold at Sotheby’s in 2012 where it emerged from a private collection in Forest Hills, New York. The lamp is estimated at $150,000-$200,000.

Among the favrile glass selections, the most anticipated lot is a circa-1910 Tiffany Studios favrile glass and gilt bronze seven-light Lily lamp. Standing 21in in height, the lamp is estimated at $8,000-$10,000.

Founded in 1903, Steuben is one of the names that made Corning, New York the glass capital of not only America, but the world. Still in operation today, Steuben has a long history of producing some of the most collectible glass in the market, with varieties such as Aurene, Tyrian, and Tiffany. Among the sale’s Steuben selections, the leader is a red Aurene glass footed vase dating to around 1910. Standing 12.25in in height, it carries an estimate of $40,000-$50,000.

Lalique makes up a highly curated and desirable 15 lots in the sale. This R. Lalique engraved glass artistic vase features a sepia patina and was made around 1919. It is estimated at $7,000-$9,000.

From the creative vision of the master of Art Nouveau glass comes this circa-1920 Gallé mold-blown cameo glass Calla Lily vase. It measures 14 by 14in, has stunning color and design, and is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. The sale includes 26 Gallé items in all.

MUNICH — A trio of sales held across two days is planned for Quittenbaum, with a two-part Art Deco and Art Nouveau sale spanning Tuesday, November 14 and Wednesday, November 15, and a third session featuring 1920s Weimar-era figurative ceramics from KPM Meissen and Goldscheider on the 15th. All three catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Session 1, Session 2, Session 3).

French Art Nouveau titan Émile Gallé (1846-1904) is considered a father of the movement’s glass and furniture, and Quittenbaum’s sale features an astounding 47 lots representing his work. The top-estimated lot is a Nancy Soufflé Rhododendron table light, created in the 1925-36 timeframe, well after his death. The cased glass is opalescent, colorless, yellow and violet, and blown using the so-called “soufflé” technique. The lamp is estimated at €80,000-€90,000 ($84,896-$95,508).

The first session is similarly heavy with a fine range of Lalique. Vases, figurals and paperweights are all well-represented and include this René Lalique Ronces vase dated 1921 but likely produced before 1947 at either Combs-la-Ville or Wingen-sur-Moder. It is estimated at €3,500-€4,500 ($3,714-$4,775).

Fans of Gabriel Argy-Rousseau (1885-1953), a master of pâte de verre (glass paste), have 11 lots from which to choose. His 1925 Floréal table light features his trademark pâte de verre technique and is estimated at €20,000-€24,000 ($21,224-$25,468).

The second session leads with a bronze by Alexander Kéléty (circa-1874-1940) whose Art Deco sculptures were widely exhibited between the two world wars throughout Europe. Archer is dated 1930, from the peak of his career, features a dark brown and greenish patina and carries the manufacturer’s mark ETLING Paris. It’s estimated at €30,000-€40,000 ($31,836-$42,448).

The third session, titled Mythological Beauties. Figurative Ceramics, is packed with 155 lots, dominated by KPM Meissen porcelain figurals from the Weimar period. Leading this session is a KPM Meissen execution of Arthur Lange’s Night from 1901, but thought to have been produced before 1924. The 17in figure is estimated at €6,000-€8,000 ($6,367-$8,489).

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – In a sale drawn on the collection of the late Marie-Claude Lalique (1935-2003), the granddaughter of the famed French jewelry designer and glass artisan came out on top. The 271-lot auction, held at Lion and Unicorn on September 10, featured pieces by René Lalique, Marc Lalique (René’s son and Marie-Claude’s father), and Marie-Claude Lalique, who was the last member of the family to run the firm.

The overall top lot was a unique piece handmade and signed by Marie-Claude. The three-panel 80in-tall screen with a mixed media image of glass flowers on a wooden frame with brass hardware achieved $24,000 ($30,000 with buyer’s premium)

The René Lalique lot that commanded the highest sum was not a surprise. A molded plaque of a woman’s face in frosted and clear glass, believed to have been made to grace an interior of the Cote d’Azur Pullman Express luxury train, realized $8,250 ($10,312 with buyer’s premium).

And the highest price for a Marc Lalique piece went to a pair of fogged crystal wall sconces with oak leaf-form tops that can be detached from their crystal and metal bases. The pair earned $5,000 ($6,250 with buyer’s premium).

Many other lots from the Marie-Claude Lalique collection did well, and some were welcome surprises. It’s possible that the same bidder secured a set of four Lalique owl-motif lowball glasses and also a group of three other Lalique owl-motif lowball glasses. Each lot was estimated at $200-$800 and they respectively sold for $2,200 ($2,750 with buyer’s premium) and $1,300 ($1,625 with buyer’s premium).

Also posting head-turning results were a Lalique crystal figure of a Sumatra elephant that earned $2,000 ($2,500 with buyer’s premium) and a Lalique amber crystal lion figure dating to circa 2018 that brought $1,700 ($2,135 with buyer’s premium).
