Copeland jewelry box tops Arts and Crafts treasures at California Historical Design March 23-24

Silver and enamel box by Elizabeth Copeland, estimated at $15,000-$20,000 at California Historical Design.

ALAMEDA, Calif. – A fine example of the work of the Boston Arts and Crafts enameler Elizabeth Ethel Copeland (1866-1957) leads the lineup at California Historical Design this month. The hand-hammered silver and enamel jewelry box carries an estimate of $15,000-$20,000 as part of the Saturday, March 23 and Sunday, March 24 sale titled Stickley Arts and Crafts Auction. The catalog is now open for bidding on LiveAuctioneers.

Simply signed with the raised initials EC and dated to circa 1905, this 4.5-by-3.5in casket is a relatively early example from the prime period when Copeland was first exhibiting. Famously, she had hidden away her artistic ambitions for years while working at her family’s dairy farm, but in 1901, at the age of 35, attracted the patronage of the Arts and Crafts artist and benefactor Sarah Choate Sears. In 1906 Irene Sargent, writing in The Keystone, had commented: “The traditional figure of the enamelist is masculine. Miss Copeland working at her furnace possesses attractions quite other than those belonging to the woman who paints a portrait or who illustrates a book.” Her signature technique, which created an enamel surface resembling cabochon gemstone, is seen to good effect on this well-preserved box.

Some choice examples of American Arts and Crafts furniture on offer include a Gustav Stickley roll-top desk that descended in the same Milwaukee family for four generations. Originally selling for $115 in 1904, this model, number 713, was one of the most expensive in the Gustav Stickley catalog. This furnishing, with an ‘excellent original finish’, is estimated at $8,000-$12,000.

Also dated circa 1905 is a Roycroft Double Morris chair, estimated at $15,000-$20,000. Again, retaining an ‘excellent original finish’ according to the lot notes, this chair was formerly in the collection of Christopher ‘Kip’ Forbes and last sold at Rago in October 2012.

The staying power of Stickley furniture is virtually unmatched

NEW YORK – With its back-to-basics approach to furniture making, the Stickley brand has become known for fine American craftsmanship. Stickley furniture has not only survived but flourished during the last century and a half.

Making furniture with several of his brothers in Pennsylvania starting in 1883, and then in his own firm in 1900 in upstate New York, Gustav Stickley whet the American appetite for furniture that was well-made and unlike the inferior machine-made pieces of the Industrial Revolution. The Arts and Crafts movement has already become popular in Britain, and Stickley helped it gain a foothold across the pond. Through his furniture and his publication, Craftsman magazine, he espoused the ideals of pride in craftsmanship, superior materials and construction techniques.

Few furniture companies have had the staying power of Stickley. While it is no longer under its original family ownership, the company continues with new designs as well as reissues of early designs that have captivated generations of buyers. Even as the company has evolved, simplicity remains a mainstay.

As with most varieties of antique furniture, the earliest examples in good original condition – especially those with striking forms, rarity and provenance – are apt to bring the most money. A inlaid settle for Stickley, model 214, by Harvey Ellis or LaMont A. Warner, performed comfortably within its $80,000-$120,000 estimate at $85,000 plus the buyer’s premium in June 2023 at Toomey & Co. Auctioneers. This circa-1903 settle in oak and fruitwood, having copper and pewter inlay, was designed shortly after Gustav Stickley brought Ellis to Syracuse, New York to design Craftsman homes and furniture. Ellis’s tenure was important but cut short by his passing in January 1904.

“The brief time that Harvey Ellis worked for Gustav Stickley is considered by many to be the stylistic peak of Stickley furniture … forms attributed to Ellis have a generally lighter touch than most Stickley works before and after,” according to Toomey’s website.

Ellis typically featured decorative wood and metal inlays, and this particular piece has six handsome — and each slightly different — fruitwood landscapes. They were centered in metal inlays, and their repetition gives a decorative finish to what was normally a simple yet classic piece. Ellis is generally credited for this design, but Warner, who worked in Stickley’s furniture department, has also been named as a possible creator of the landscapes.

Stickley furniture with Ellis inlays are scarce and have held their investment value. An early writing table, featuring elaborate inlays in wood and metal, brought $35,000 plus the buyer’s premium in December 2022 at Toomey & Co. Auctioneers. The 1903 table had inlaid vignettes of Viking ships and stylized floral motifs, the latter having a trident-like and elongated design inspired by Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s work. Fruitwood roundels of a Viking ship under sail were a then-favorite motif of Ellis, who tapped into early 20th-century consumers’ growing interest in Norse mythology and culture.

Stickley has long performed well on the auction market. Buyers and collectors of all means can find something in their price range, with sophisticated collectors gravitating toward early pieces such as a circa-1902 leather top gaming table that took $67,500 plus the buyer’s premium in April 2021 at Abington Auction Gallery. Featuring quarter sawn oak and peg and mortise joints, the table was elegantly simple and functional, and boasted a studded leather top above six drawers.

Fine and early bookcases are also highly sought after. A circa-1901 oak bookcase, model #512, attained $50,000 plus the buyer’s premium in November 2021 at Butterscotch Auction. This model, which has been widely reproduced during the years, has a glazed door that opens on multiple cabinet shelves, some open and some inner.

Two-door bookcases are also popular, and there are enough good examples in existence to attract mid-range collectors as well as veteran collectors seeking museum-quality pieces that can withstand daily use. A circa-1912 two-door bookcase, model #718, realized $8,000 plus the buyer’s premium in March 2022 at California Historical Design. Each door has 12 panes of wavy glass, and the bookcase bears Stickley’s large shop mark on its backside.

One of the most enduring and iconic designs for Gustav Stickley was his Morris chair, which has been reissued many times. It is still produced today, albeit with modern adaptations, including bustle-back cushions. Collectors looking for authentic original examples would be satisfied with a circa-1901 tapered bow-arm Morris chair that attained $40,000 plus the buyer’s premium in August 2020 at Rafael Osona Auctions. The oak-frame chair retained its original black leather seat back and cushion.

Stickley furniture has held its value across the decades and has sustained a strong track record in the auction market. Those with an eye for vintage and antique pieces that combine fine design, artful construction and practicality would be hard pressed to find better furniture for their home. These pieces, which were radical in its day, are now fixtures in many fine homes.

ALAMEDA, Calif. — Fine furniture from the Stickley family of craftsmen are the featured category in California Historical Design’s Arts & Crafts auction scheduled for Saturday, December 9. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The five Stickley brothers — Gustav, Leopold, John George, Albert, and Charles — were stars of the early 20th-century American Arts & Crafts movement. Launched by Gustav (1858-1942) in 1900, Stickley hand-crafted some of the most iconic designs of the period, highlighted by his famous Mission style and brother Leopold’s Cherry Valley designs via his own brand, L. & J. G. Stickley.

The sale includes 57 Stickley lots, led by an early 1902 Gustav Stickley oak and hammered copper bridal chest. Completely original and still bearing the red Stickley decal, the chest is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

Bernard Maybeck (1962-1957) was a Berkeley, California native, architect and furniture designer who left a similarly large legacy to the Arts & Crafts movement. The sale includes three Maybeck items by his own hand, plus two additional items from homes he designed. A love seat, settee and a hand-carved table are all estimated at $25,000-$35,000 each.

Begun as therapy for sanitarium patients, Marblehead Pottery grew to become a production-based earthenware company focused on hand-decorated items. This floral-motif vase dating to circa 1910 is from early in the company’s history and is described as being in “perfect condition.” It is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

CHICAGO — Back-to-back same-day sales are scheduled for Hindman on Tuesday, November 14. The day begins with Modern Design at 11 AM Eastern time, showcasing 250 curated lots from top names across the world of design. Following at 4 PM Eastern time is Early 20th Century Design, which boasts names such as Tiffany Studios, Handel, and Gustav Stickley. Both catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers (Morning, Afternoon).

Hans J. Wegner (1914-2007) was a leader in mid-century Danish design, bringing the clean and often austere look into homes worldwide. The morning session has seven Wegner lots, topped by the iconic Papa Bear lounge chair and ottoman. Also known as the AP Stolen model no. AP-19, the duo features classic teak with fine upholstery and carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Famed glass studio artist Jon Kuhn (b. 1949-) is also well represented by six lots. Kuhn’s cut-glass approach is designed to accept and then redirect inbound light back to the viewer in unexpected and remarkable ways. His 1995 work Cubed to the 7th features seven art-glass cubes encased into a larger rectangular glass enclosure, producing his trademark lighting effects. The lot is estimated at $15,000-$20,000.

The morning’s top lot is a circa-1965 mirror by Line Vautrin (1913-1997), the famed metalworker whose jewelry and decor items are highly treasured by collectors and designers alike. The lot is sold with a certificate of authenticity issued by the Comite Line Vautrin, and is estimated at $50,000-$70,000.

The afternoon session includes a small selection of Tiffany Studios items, dominated by a magnificent stained leaded glass window Musician in the Cove. Dating to circa 1890, the window features a woman playing a stringed instrument with a view of the shore behind her shoulders. The 73.5 by 44in piece is estimated at $15,000-$30,000.

Stickley furniture and lighting collectors will find plenty of opportunities as well. A sideboard by Gustav Stickley (1858-1942) known as #901 Eastwood, NY is made of fumed oak with iron hardware. Measuring 39.5 by 50 by 23in, it carries an estimate of $8,000-$12,000.

Noted industrial designer Walter Dorwin Teague (1883-1960) is remembered for helping create the concept of industrial design, along with other luminaries such as Raymond Loewy and Henry Dreyfus. His groundbreaking designs for Kodak; Texaco; the New York, New Haven, and Hartford Railroad; and Steuben / Corning Glass are among his career highlights. This set of Embassy glasses for competitor Libbey Glass totals 18, along with two related glasses. The lot is estimated at $3,000-$5,000.
