Hindman’s ‘Never Too Much’ auction earns $1.1M with works by Powell and Abercrombie

CHICAGO – Hindman’s Summer Jukebox-themed fine art and modern design auction achieved $1.1 million, a new house record for the annual sale. This year’s sale, held on July 27, was titled Never Too Much after Luther Vandross’s debut single, which proved to be prophetic as several lots vaulted well past their estimates on the way to auction records. Absentee and Internet live bidding was facilitated through LiveAuctioneers.

CHICAGO – Timed to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the publication of Josef Albers’ seminal The Interaction of Color, Hindman will present Color Theory, an auction focused on artists who investigated the transformative power of color. With nearly 100 lots, the auction, set for Friday, July 28, is a celebration of color in modern and contemporary printmaking, including works by Albers, Gene Davis, Ellsworth Kelly, Victor Vasarely, Robert Motherwell, Andy Warhol, Helen Frankenthaler, Anish Kapoor and Damien Hirst. A group of Patrick Heron prints sold to benefit the Acquisition Fund of the Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields will also be offered. CINCINNATI – Hindman will present an impressive range of jewelry by early and contemporary master Native American artists in its Thursday, July 13 Native American Jewelry auction. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers. The sale will be anchored by a strong group of Hopi jewelry by internationally renowned designer Charles Loloma (1921-1991). CINCINNATI – On June 15-16, Hindman’s summer American Historical Ephemera & Photography auction saw passionate bidding for early photographs and material relating to America’s westward expansion. A half plate daguerreotype of three gold miners realized $37,800, five times its estimate. The image of the three men epitomizes the gold rush itself, as their somewhat haggard appearance is offset by supremely resolute expressions behind their lit cigars. CINCINNATI and CHICAGO – Tiffany Studios and Daum glass led Hindman’s biannual May Design auctions, with a number of the top lots coming from the estate of Madelyn Marley of Yakima, Washington. Overall, the Early 20th Century Design auction, held May 23, and the Modern Design auction, which took place May 24, together achieved $1,148,365. CHICAGO – First editions of each of Jane Austen’s major novels led Hindman’s May 11 Fine Printed Books & Manuscripts auction. The five books, including Austen’s Pride and Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, realized more than $300,000. Overall, the auction totaled more than $1.1 million and was more than 94 percent sold.
