NEW YORK – Consider this your fair warning: antique books can be addictive. On Tuesday, December 26, starting at 4 pm Eastern time, you will have a chance to personally test this theory when Jasper52 presents a sale titled Ink of Ages: 15th-19th Century Antique Books. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Just one lot in the sale qualifies as incunabula, a term applied to books dating to 1500 or earlier, from the infancy of the printing press. It is a Latin-language Bible printed in Venice in 1489, and it was one of the first printed bibles to employ a series of woodcut illustrations. They are attributed to the Master of the Pico Pliny, who had previously illustrated bibles by hand. The incunabula Bible’s estimate is $10,000-$12,000.

Another highlight is a Latin-language five-volume set, including some incunabula and some post-incunabula editions, of Franciscan preacher Olivier Maillard’s sermons on the slang language of his time. According to the lot notes, Maillard was ‘one of the greatest Franciscan preachers of the late 15th century and confessor to King Charles VIII. He owes his reputation to the brutality of his sermons where he borrows from those he blames a coarse language, peppered with words taken from the wrong places.’ The set is estimated at $4,000-$5,000.

Also featured is an incomplete vellum-bound seven-volume set, printed in 1736, of the Scholastic-Positive Dogmatic Theology of the Fathers by R.P. Antonio Boucat, which carries an estimate of $800-$1,000.
