Aesthetic movement porcelain by Minton and Royal Worcester brings beauty to Strawser April 23

Royal Worcester Aesthetic movement moon flask decorated with Japanese-style fauna against a black ground, estimated at $1,500-$2,500 at Strawser Auction Group.

WOLCOTTVILLE, Ind. – A collection of Aesthetic movement porcelain formed by the New York-New Jersey retailer Helene Fortunoff (1933-2021) will be presented at Strawser Auction Group on Tuesday, April 23. Fortunoff, who joined the retail operation of her husband’s family in Brooklyn in the 1950s, oversaw the firm’s expansion into jewelry and became its president in 2000.

The Aesthetic movement and its Far Eastern-inspired designs were her passion. Buying through the London dealership Nicholas Boston Antiques during the past two decades, she amassed a 243-lot collection of wares, predominantly by Royal Worcester and Minton, that epitomized the late 19th-century ‘cult of beauty.’

Japanese- and Chinese-style porcelains were first exhibited by Royal Worcester in London in 1872 – a decade after displays of Japanese works of art had caused a sensation at the expos in London (1862) and Paris (1867). R.W. Binns, the artistic director of the Royal Worcester factory, built up his own collection of Far Eastern ceramics to inspire and educate his workers in the concepts of asymmetry, flat patterning, and simplified form.

There are 54 lots of Royal Worcester wares from this singular period in the Fortunoff collection. Few are slavish copies. Instead, they are works of Orientalism, adapted and assimilating to meet Western ideals and taste. They include a remarkable pair of circa-1875 moon flasks that combine a Far Eastern form with decoration borrowed from the European Renaissance. The central floral displays are done in pate sur pate, the ‘clay-on-clay’ technique that arrived in the UK from Paris with the decorated Marc-Louis Solon in 1870. Together, these moon flasks carry the top estimate of the sale at $5,000-$7,000.

Many of the best Aesthetic movement wares of the Minton factory were designed with the input of Christopher Dresser. An expert on Eastern art and design, Dresser had drawn huge inspiration from the Japanese Court at the 1862 exhibition and visited Japan himself as a British emissary in 1876. Prior to his journey, he was hired by Tiffany & Co. of New York to assemble a representative collection of art and design objects.

The 58 lots of Minton porcelain includes several pieces from the famous series of Dresser wares designed in imitation of cloisonné. A cabinet plate, similar to others shown by Minton at the 1878 Paris International Exhibition, is estimated at $800-$1,200. As always, bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

Original red carpet from the 20th Century Limited train leads our five lots to watch

Section of 20th Century Limited train red carpet, estimated at $2,500-$3,500 at Rail & Road Auctions.

Section of Red Carpet Used on the Legendary 20th Century Limited Train

LAFAYETTE, Ind. – When the phrase ‘rolling out the red carpet’ was first coined, it was used in relation to the railroads. Red carpet in a rail carriage meant VIP guests.

This section of carpet, measuring 6ft 4in by 5ft 10in, features the logo of the 20th Century Limited, the express passenger train that first traveled the New York Central line in 1902. Aimed at upper-class and business travelers, it cut hours off the trip from Chicago to New York City for those who could afford the ticket price of $51.30 (roughly equivalent to $900 today). In 1928, around the time this carpet was made, the 20th Century train earned revenue of $10 million.

Evoking the romance of the golden era of rail travel, and in remarkably good condition save some signs of daily use, the 20th Century Limited train red carpet carries an estimate of $2,500-$3,500 and will be offered on the second day of the Thursday, January 4 and Friday, January 5 sale at Rail & Road Auctions.

Set of 12 Mintons for Tiffany pĂąte-sur-pĂąte dinner plates, estimated at $6,000-$8,000 at Taylor & Harris.

WILMINGTON, Calif. – The Decorative Arts Jewelry Auction taking place Saturday, December 30 at Taylor & Harris includes this lavish set of 12 Minton dinner plates. As indicated by the backstamp, they were made in Staffordshire specifically for sale at Tiffany & Co. in New York.

In the years before the Depression, Tiffany & Co. was one of the Minton factory’s biggest clients, commissioning elegant wares to furnish the houses of the American Gilded Age. These plates are decorated with slate blue cameos in the painstaking pñte-sur-pñte technique, with each medallion signed ABirks or AB to the lower edge.

Albion Birks (1862-1941) learned his trade at Minton as an apprentice to Marc-Louis Solon from 1877, and continued to work at the factory until he retired in 1937. These plates, which carry the date 1929, were made in his last decade and in the year of the stock market crash that ended much of the market for such deluxe porcelain. Described as being in great condition, the set has an estimate of $6,000-$8,000.

First Edition of Harriet Beecher Stowe’s ‘A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin'

COLUMBIA, Mo. – Following the publication of Uncle Tom’s Cabin in 1852, Harriet Beecher Stowe was accused by Southern commentators of having misrepresented the institution of slavery. In response, the following year she published A Key to Uncle Tom’s Cabin to document the veracity of her findings and push her own anti-slavery views.

The full title of the book was A key to Uncle Tom’s cabin presenting the original facts and documents upon which the story is founded together with corroborative statements verifying the truth of the work. It was perhaps not surprising that the reaction of Stowe’s contemporaries was again polarizing, with the book receiving both very positive and very negative reviews. This 1853 first edition copy by John Jewett of Cleveland, Ohio will be offered at Schilb Antiquarian Rare Books on Sunday, January 7 with no reserve and an estimate of $499-$1,000.

Red Sox 1918 World Series Pennant

1918 World Series Red Sox pennant, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 at Saco River Auction.

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Whoever first owned this 1918 Red Sox World Series pennant acquired it when the team was at its historic peak. It had four other World Series victories under its belt, including the first-ever contest, played in 1903, as well as triumphs in 1912 (the year its now-classic stadium, Fenway Park, opened), 1915, and 1916.

Of course, there was no way to foresee the misery that was to come. While the team would make the playoffs in 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986, it would not enjoy another World Series win until after the turn of the millennium.

In 2004, after an 86-year wait and a heart attack-inducing American League Championship Series (ALCS) in which they came back from a 3-0 deficit against the New York Yankees to win and advance to the World Series, the Red Sox defeated the St. Louis Cardinals in a four-game sweep to earn the highest prize in baseball.

Since then, the Red Sox won the World Series in 2007, 2013, and 2018. But this 34in long red pennant, estimated at $2,000-$3,000 and appearing in a Monday, January 1 sale at Saco River Auction, serves as a potent reminder of the joys and the agonies that come with following a beloved sports team.

Scale Model of the Empire State Building Once Owned by Frank Sinatra

Scale model of the Empire State Building that once belonged to Frank Sinatra, estimated at $6,000-$12,000 at Nadeau’s Auction Gallery.

WINDSOR, Conn. – The lasting impact of Frank Sinatra on American culture continues to reverberate, 25 years after his passing. The first pop star, he inspired a generation’s musical background, creating a litany of hits that are still familiar to the ear today.

Being such an icon, Sinatra was subject to numerous interviews and profiles towards the end of his life, as is typical. He was famously private, but did agree to work with producers of an HBO special about his life and career, and granted them a sit-down interview. During the interview, he sat next to a looming scale model of New York’s Empire State Building, a fitting metaphor for the man who made New York a central part of his musical lexicon.

When Sinatra’s family dispersed material from the singer’s estate at Christie’s in December of 1995, the Empire State Building model was one of the items to cross the block. It returns to market at Nadeau’s Auction Gallery as part of its 2024 Annual New Year’s Day Auction on Monday, January 1, with an estimate of $6,000-$12,000.

KULPSVILLE, Penn. — As a dealer since the age of 19, London-based Nick Boston has helped build some of the greatest majolica collections. But few collections of 19th-century tin-glazed earthenwares are as large or as varied in scope as that assembled by the property lawyer Edward Flower (1929-2022) and his wife Marilyn (1930-2017).

“Their ‘way’ was a very scholarly way but also a very passionate way, which in my experience is how the greatest collections are built,” Boston recalls. “Rarity, whimsy, history and aesthetics, the Flower collection has it all.”

The Flowers were inveterate collectors: first it was American Impressionism, then artist-signed prints and British art pottery (61 lots sold by Doyle New York in December) and majolica.

Across three sales more than 600 pieces, mostly acquired since the bug bit hard 30 years ago, will be offered by specialists Strawser Auction Group (with a 23% buyer’s premium). The first tranche of 190 lots was presented in Kulpsville, Pennsylvania on August 23.

It is an indication of collecting fashion and the Flowers’ love of all members of the majolica family that a 22in (55cm) Palissy-style ‘art of the earth’ basin shared the top price of the sale.

A large signed and dated example of an increasingly popular type, it sold well above its $2,000-$3,000 estimate to an internet bidder for $40,000 ($49,200 including buyer’s premium). Teeming with life, from a pike laying in a pool of water in the center to a lush border populated by lizards, a snake and a frog, it is inscribed and dated Avisseau, Tours, 1856 for Charles-Jean Avisseau (1795-1861). The French ceramicist, based in Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, is often credited with rediscovering the techniques of Bernard Palissy (circa 1510-1590) although his most ambitious creations often went well beyond those of the Renaissance potter. Similar mid-19th-century exercises in historicism were exhibited by Avisseau at the Great Exhibition 1851.

Also signed and dated 1856 was an Avisseau ‘grotto’ group modeled as a naturalistic forest floor scene with a snake, lizard and frog climbing on rocks and vegetation. Measuring 6 by 10in, it took $18,000 ($22,140 including buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $3,000-$5,000. It had been sold by the auction house in October 2017 for $14,000.

Continental European wares, once the slightly poorer relation to pieces by the best Staffordshire factories, were a strength of the sale. Particularly well-received was a menagerie of large naturalistic models by the Massier Brothers, Choisy Le Roi and Hugo Lonitz factories. All had lived together in the Flowers’ Bay Shore, New York residence.

A 2ft high model of a hawk perched on a rocky ground with ferns and branches, made by Hugo Lonitz circa 1875, was estimated at $20,000-$25,000 and earned $40,000 ($49,200 with buyer’s premium). In fine condition, save a small loss to the tail feather, it is the same model that sold for $30,000 in October 2017. The only other one known sold at Christie’s New York in November 2011, where it realized $56,250.

Also among only two known examples, a Lonitz jardiniere modeled as a hoopoe perched on an open tree trunk brought $10,000 ($12,300 with buyer’s premium).

A floor vase by Hippolyte Hautin Boulanger & Cie of Choisy le Roi, France is one of only three that are known. The 2ft 1in model of brightly glazed male and female golden pheasants strutting around a broken vase is signed for Louise Robert Carrier Belleuse, the son of the better-known sculptor Albert Carrier Belleuse and Hautin Boulanger’s premier modeler. It took $6,500 ($7,995 with buyer’s premium).

Several pieces in the Flower collection were recently featured in the exhibition Majolica Mania: Transatlantic Pottery in England and the United States, 1850-1915, which was launched at the Bard Graduate Center, New York City in the fall of 2021 and traveled to the Walters Museum in Baltimore in early 2022 before ending at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke-on-Trent, England in January.

Among the pieces chosen for Majolica Mania was an extraordinary work by Brown Westhead Moore & Co. This 2ft 1in high vase modeled with clouds and a coiling dragon was designed by Mark V. Marshall (better known for his work at the Doulton Lambeth factory) for display at the Philadelphia Centennial Exhibition 1876. An example is illustrated in the second volume of The Masterpieces of the Centennial International Exhibition Illustrated, published in 1876-78. With a professional repair to the top rim, it realized $10,000 ($12,300 with buyer’s premium).

Also from Majolica Mania was a circa-1875 George Jones cabaret set or tete-a-tete with each of the elements designed as cobalt blue drums, with yellow stringing. Drumsticks form the spout of the teapot with a drummer boy’s hat as the finial. One of only two known complete sets with all the elements in good condition, it achieved $37,500 ($46,125 with buyer’s premium).

Among the most popular lots from the George Jones factory was a pair of tulip and butterfly pattern candlesticks – rare elements from a dressing table for which the original George Jones artwork still survives. As each of the pieces could be purchased separately, some of the larger elements or the optional extras were sold in only small numbers. The candlesticks, seemingly the only pair known, sold at $21,000 ($25,830 with buyer’s premium) followed by bids of $6,000 ($7,380 with buyer’s premium) each for a matching single chamberstick and an oval dressing table tray.

After retiring in the early 2000s, Edward and Marilyn Flower attended almost every majolica auction held by Strawser Auction Group. Rarely outbid when they spotted a piece they had to have, they were particularly strong buyers when the collection of Marilyn Karmason, who co-authored with Joan Stacke Graham the 1989 book Of Majolica: A Complete History & Illustrated Survey, was sold by Strawser in 2005.

Some of the best-known Minton models have also fallen from the sums they commanded at that sale.

Sold at $37,500 ($46,125 with buyer’s premium) was a well-preserved version of the celebrated cobalt blue Flat Iron teapot modeled with a frieze of mice to the sides and a large white cat wrapped around the handle. The design has an uncertain attribution to Christopher Dresser. The example in the Karmason collection hammered at $65,000 in 2005.

Bought at Doyle’s in New York in December 2021 as part of the collection of Joan Stacke Graham was a George Jones Sea and Sky Stilton cover and stand modeled with aquatic life in a cobalt sea and avian life in a turquoise sky. A fine form in good condition, it had brought $15,000 in New York and this time made $13,000 ($15,990 with buyer’s premium).

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. – Lion & Unicorn is currently dispersing property from Marie-Claude Lalique, the granddaughter of the jewelry and glass designer René Lalique. On Wednesday, September 20, the Florida firm will offer her collection of books by Jules Verne (1814-1886), inherited from her grandfather. It is said that RenĂ© Lalique and Jules Verne were close acquaintances, and these books were personally given to Lalique by Verne.

The collection will be offered in 41 lots, with most editions estimated at $200-$800 each. This 1885 copy of the novel L’Epave du Cynthia (The Wreck of the Cynthia) was written by Verne after a manuscript by Andre Laurie (Jean Francois Paschal Grousset, 1844-1909). Published by Pierre Jules Hetzel et Cie, Paris, the illustrations are by George Roux. He was the second-most prolific illustrator of Verne’s novels, after Leon Benett, drawing the illustrations for 22 novels between 1885 (L’Épave du Cynthia was the first) and 1919.

PHILADELPHIA – Property from the estate of the New Jersey art collector Angela Gross Folk will be offered by Freeman’s in a tightly edited 65-lot selection on Wednesday, September 20. Leading the lineup at $40,000-$60,000 is Haystack (The Farm, Frosty Morning) by New Hope School artist Charles Rosen (1878-1950). He painted landscapes for more than 15 years, with this work, dated 1911, representing a relatively early example of a softer and more atmospheric style.

After it was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1911, fellow Pennsylvanian Impressionist Daniel Garber wrote to Rosen to share his admiration: “I want to congratulate you on the picture of a haystack with a couple of sheep coming through a fence. I think it is the best I have seen of yours and I like it very much as did most of the gentlemen on the jury.”

Haystack will be presented at auction for the first time on September 20. It was acquired by Angela Gross Folk directly from the artist’s daughter in 1981, and it has since been on long-term loan to the Solebury Bank in New Hope, Pennsylvania.

GARDENA, Calif. – After beginning his career at the Sùvres porcelain factory, Marc Louis Solon (1835-1913) moved to Stoke-on-Trent, England to work at Mintons, where he became the leading exponent of the pñte-sur-pñte technique. His work commanded high prices in the late Victorian period, and it is still much admired today.

This 9in vase, signed and dated coded 1897, is decorated on a peacock blue ground with a diaphanous classical figure leaping across a mountainous landscape populated by a flock of gulls. At Taylor & Harris on Tuesday, September 24, it carries an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

NEW YORK — This painted terracotta bust of a young lady, titled La Jeunesse, is by Herbert Adams (1858-1945).

Formerly part of the American sculpture collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, the circa-1900 bust was later sold in the 1990s and has appeared for sale twice at auction since, at Christie’s in 2017 and at Sotheby’s this year, when it sold as part of the Wolf Family collection. It reappears at Roland New York on Saturday, September 23 with an estimate of $4,000-$6,000.

Considered one of the most prominent American art colonies, the Cornish Art Colony flourished from 1890 to the mid-1920s and featured some of the most established and celebrated artists at the turn of the century. Adams was a member of the Cornish Art Colony in New Hampshire and a leading sculptor of the Renaissance Revival movement. PARIS – Design specialist Piasa offers 166 lots from the collection of Lefebvre-Vornic on Wednesday, September 27. The auction, which features many major names of the 20th and 21st centuries, will raise money for an endowment fund devoted to the revival of opera.

This vase is by the Italian painter and glass artist Dino Martens (1894-1970). The former artistic director of the Venetian glassworks Aureliano Toso, he combined traditional Muranese techniques with daring asymmetric shapes.

The vase (Model 5389) was part of his so-called Oriente range – the result of many experiments in which Martens strived to fuse the borders between painting and blown glass. The technique, which he exhibited for the first time at the 1952 Venice Biennale, was achieved by rolling a clear cylinder of glass over colorful, flat patterns comprising ground glass and aventurine, glass canes and latticino glass squares. This model, one first made in 1954, is estimated at €8,000-€12,000 ($8,720-$15,480).

NEW YORK — Cheese keepers come in a variety of forms and with all manner of decoration, but they are arguably at their best when they are bold and lavish. Among the most beloved styles of these covered cheese dishes, aka Stilton dishes, are examples made in majolica. As a ceramics form, majolica was highly popular in the Victorian era — it was more affordable than porcelain, so it was accessible to more homes. By the early 20th century, it was supplanted by more modern materials as consumer tastes changed and as the dangers posed to workers who applied the colorful lead glazes became known. Today, majolica cheese keepers remain highly prized by collectors and those who appreciate fine ceramics.

NEW YORK — Traveling to faraway places for pleasure is so commonplace now that it can be hard to imagine a time when it wasn’t the case. In the 17th and 18th centuries, most people could not dream of visiting another country, but, as the West began openly trading with China, Westerners developed a keen fascination with the distant nation. European designers and tastemakers fueled this desire for all things Chinese. They created a style of decoration called chinoiserie, which derives from the French word “chinois,” for Chinese, as it was evocative of Asian art. (“Chinoiserie” is pronounced “shin-WAH-suh-ree.”)
