GLEN COVE, N.Y. — The third and final installment in the liquidation of New York’s legendary Phyllis Lucas Gallery (also known as the Old Print Center) arrives at Roland NY on Saturday, November 4. The sale is dominated by multi-item lots — some containing as many as 100 items — in order to complete the inventory clearance. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale includes more than 20,000 antique and historical prints of all kinds, along with other artwork, making it a fitting tribute to the end of a storied business. Dating to 1928, the Old Print Center was a one-stop source for historical illustrations, photos, maps and much more, drawn from a huge network of collectors and institutions. The gallery is perhaps best known for its 1960s collaboration with Salvador Dali, when from 1965 to 1974 it published the Lucas Collection of Dali Originals.

Many of these period pieces are in the November 4 sale, in multi-item lots, often in the form of a complete flat-file drawer. It’s vital to view the gallery of images accompanying each lot to get an accurate portrayal of its total contents.

The top-estimated lot in the sale, at $800-$1,200, is a set of eight lithographs from Adriaan Lubbers (1892-1954). The Dutch artist made his first trip to New York in 1916 and was immediately captivated by the city’s skyline and sights, going on to create a series of works from which these lithos are derived. From the waterfront to downtown, Lubbers prints are highly valued by collectors.

Popular interest in ornithology helped drive the early sales of lithographs to a larger audience in the 19th century. Prideaux John Selby (1788-1867) was a British ornithologist and artist best known for his early- to mid-19th century Illustrations of British Ornithology, a collection of life-sized illustrations of local birds. Roland NY’s sale includes a set of eight Selby ornithological etchings, each signed and numbered by the artist, estimated at $500-$1,000.

With photography still in its infancy, illustrations provided the populace with the majority of depictions of battlefield scenes of the American Civil War. This set of approximate 50 lithographs show the Battle of Princeton, the Fort Pillow Massacre, the Capture of Fort Fisher and many more. It is estimated at $50-$500.
