Famed architect and designer Thierry Despont’s estate showcased at Roland NY April 6

GLEN COVE, N.Y. — Roland NY will present a very rare auction opportunity when it offers the highly anticipated collection from the estate of world-renowned New York architect and designer Thierry Despont on Saturday, April 6. The complete catalog is now open for review and bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Despont (1948-2023) lived in a 10,000-square-foot Tribeca townhouse at 182 Franklin Street that recently sold for $25 million, and Roland’s sale features more than 200 lots of ‘rare and highly curated’ pieces from the late designer’s collection. Included is artwork, furniture, rare books, and sculptures which have never appeared at auction previously.

Architectural Digest called Despont “the designer of choice for titans of industry.” He rose to fame when he worked on the 1986 renovation of the Statue of Liberty’s torch, crown, and stairways. He also oversaw the restoration of the Woolworth Building. In other engagements, he built houses for Bill Gates, Conrad Black, Ralph Lauren, and Michael Douglas.

Choice pieces include a Thierry Despont mixed metal sculpture featuring a moon-form disc on a vise and stand, exhibited at Marlborough Gallery in New York in 2008. It carries an estimate of $10,000-$15,000.

An 18th-century portrait painting of author and poet Alexander Pope (1688-1744), attributed to Joseph Highmore (1692-1780), is another top lot. The work has an inscribed label on the verso bearing a date of 1728, with an additional label for art dealers Scott & Fowles, who were in business on Fifth Avenue in New York from 1905 to 1943. It is estimated at $2,500-$3,500.

Likely connected to Despont’s restoration of the Statue of Liberty is Lady Liberty, an abstract of polished Belgian black marble, signed and dated by sculptor Benoit Luyckx (b. 1955-). It is estimated at $1,500-$2,500.

Despont clearly loved mid-century modern furniture. Two key items include a Le Corbusier LC4 easy chair estimated at $1,000–$1,500 and a Ludwig Mies van der Rohe for Knoll Barcelona daybed with a chrome base and black leather seat, which has an estimate of $1,000-$1,500.

GLEN COVE, N.Y. — The third and final installment in the liquidation of New York’s legendary Phyllis Lucas Gallery (also known as the Old Print Center) arrives at Roland NY on Saturday, November 4. The sale is dominated by multi-item lots — some containing as many as 100 items — in order to complete the inventory clearance. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

The sale includes more than 20,000 antique and historical prints of all kinds, along with other artwork, making it a fitting tribute to the end of a storied business. Dating to 1928, the Old Print Center was a one-stop source for historical illustrations, photos, maps and much more, drawn from a huge network of collectors and institutions. The gallery is perhaps best known for its 1960s collaboration with Salvador Dali, when from 1965 to 1974 it published the Lucas Collection of Dali Originals.

Many of these period pieces are in the November 4 sale, in multi-item lots, often in the form of a complete flat-file drawer. It’s vital to view the gallery of images accompanying each lot to get an accurate portrayal of its total contents.

The top-estimated lot in the sale, at $800-$1,200, is a set of eight lithographs from Adriaan Lubbers (1892-1954). The Dutch artist made his first trip to New York in 1916 and was immediately captivated by the city’s skyline and sights, going on to create a series of works from which these lithos are derived. From the waterfront to downtown, Lubbers prints are highly valued by collectors.

Popular interest in ornithology helped drive the early sales of lithographs to a larger audience in the 19th century. Prideaux John Selby (1788-1867) was a British ornithologist and artist best known for his early- to mid-19th century Illustrations of British Ornithology, a collection of life-sized illustrations of local birds. Roland NY’s sale includes a set of eight Selby ornithological etchings, each signed and numbered by the artist, estimated at $500-$1,000.

With photography still in its infancy, illustrations provided the populace with the majority of depictions of battlefield scenes of the American Civil War. This set of approximate 50 lithographs show the Battle of Princeton, the Fort Pillow Massacre, the Capture of Fort Fisher and many more. It is estimated at $50-$500.

GLEN COVE, N.Y. – Items from Sefton Manor, the Tudor Revival-style home in Long Island once owned by cosmetics heiress Lillian Sefton Dodge (1880-1960), are included in the two-day estates sale (Day 1, Day 2) at Roland Auctions on Friday, August 25 and Saturday, August 26. A total of 44 lots come from the property – now the Mill Neck Manor School for the Deaf – with proceeds going to the charity. Bidding is available via LiveAuctioneers.

Headline items from the consignment include a pair of 18K gold Tiffany & Co. star-form diamond and sapphire earrings, estimated at $2,500-$3,500, plus a 14K gold Tiffany & Co. shell-footed pin tray, estimated at $3,000-$4,000.

Estimated at $4,000-$6,000 is a pair of George III silver chalices by the esteemed London silversmith John Bridge. With a full set of marks for 1824 and weighing 38oz, one is engraved to the foot with a presentation inscription to Lillian Sefton Dodge, dated 1952.

By that time Dodge, the highest-paid woman executive in America during the 1930s, had left the 34-room house she had built with her husband Robert Leftwich Dodge at a cost of £2 million (roughly $2.5 million) in 1923. It became a school for deaf children in 1951 and was used for classes until 2002. Now open to the public, it is famed for its interior metalwork by Samuel Yellin.
