LOVELAND, Colo. — A Cree beaded saddle rode far past its expectations at New Frontier Western Show & Auction on August 26. Full auction results can be viewed at LiveAuctioneers.

The stunning beaded saddle was estimated at $1,600-$2,500 but sold to an internet bidder for a whopping $18,250 ($21,900 with buyer’s premium). With a detailed floral pattern realized in classic Cree fashion, the lot ended up as the top item for the entire sale.

A Hamley trophy saddle won by George Weir as the 1915 Steer Roping Champion at the Pendleton Round-Up was the top saddle lot in the sale, bringing $5,500 ($6,600 with buyer’s premium).

A horsehair bridle made in Deer Lodge Penitentiary in Montana with a bold mixture of pink and green beat its low estimate of $3,700 to hammer at $4,500 ($5,400 with buyer’s premium).

Vintage Native American apparel is always in demand, as evidenced by the results for this Sioux war shirt. It made its low estimate of $4,500 ($5,400 with buyer’s premium).

CINCINNATI – The collection of Claude “Henry” Withers and the John Baldwin Trust led the way in Hindman’s $1,185,656 April 15 Native American Art auction. Copper items from the Withers collection received significant interest from bidders, packing Hindman’s Cincinnati saleroom and achieving top prices. Revered collector and author John Baldwin’s collection also shone, with lots such as a grizzly bear claw necklace selling for $37,500 against a presale estimate of $20,000-30,000. Textiles from the collection of Bruce and Claire Montgomerie also were among top performers.
