A tiny Louis Vuitton trunk, a bronze lobster, and George Washington portraits triumphed at Thomaston Place

Louis Vuitton salesman’s sample trunk, which sold for $9,375 at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.

THOMASTON, Maine – ‘Correct in detail, material and quality of construction, down to brass hardware, stencilled cloth and monogrammed leather trim’, a miniature Louis Vuitton trunk hammered for $7,500 and sold for $9,375 at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries. Only a handful of these diminutive luggage pieces are known, made at the time either as salesman samples or as playthings for the children of wealthy Louis Vuitton customers. Following every detail of the full-size version, this suitcase measuring 11in (27cm) across was in good condition, save the interior, which had been relined in a marbled paper. Beneath it may be a label for Louis Vuitton’s offices at 149 New Bond Street and the Paris Champs Elysees. The miniature trunk sold well above its estimate of $800-$1,000, topping the first day of the February 23-25 Winter Enchantment auction.

Sharing its estimate and winning second place on Day One was a Meiji-period bronze model of a lobster. Described in the lot notes as ‘hyper realistic, fully jointed and moveable’, it was one of the remarkable models produced by Japanese metalworkers in the post-Samurai era. Despite lacking one of its antennae, it hammered for $6,000 ($7,500 with buyer’s premium).

Day Two was dominated by two portraits of George Washington by or after Gilbert Stuart (1755-1828). Estimated at $3,000-$5,000 but sold at $27,000 ($33,750 with buyer’s premium) was a circa-1805 version of the classic George Washington bust portrait – the so-called Athenaeum type, painted from life in Philadelphia in 1796. Stuart referred to these portraits as his “$100 bills” as, whenever he needed the money, he would retire to his Boston studio and paint another. He sold more than 70 of them in his lifetime, and there are many others that were painted by followers after he died. This unsigned portrait in its original frame was attributed to Stuart.

Stuart created the original full-length portrait of George Washington at Dorchester Heights for the City of Boston in 1806. It shows the general in his battle pomp posing next to the backside of a horse. The original hangs in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts with versions in Faneuil Hall in Boston and Mechanic’s Hall in Worcester, Massachusetts, but the version offered at Thomaston Place was one of many impressive if somewhat pedestrian copies. A stencil on the verso for Goupil & Co., New York dates it to the 1850s. Housed in a heavy gold molded cove frame standing 6ft high, it hammered for $26,000 ($32,500 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $5,000-$7,000.

Thomaston Place presents big three-day Winter Enchantment sale Feb. 23-25

THOMASTON, Maine — Thomaston Place Auction Galleries marks February with a huge three-day Winter Enchantment sale featuring nearly 1,100 lots of antiques, jewelry, and other collectible items. The event spans Friday, February 23 through Sunday, February 25, and the catalogs are now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Japan’s Muromachi era ran from approximately 1336 to 1573, marking the governance of the Muromachi shogunate. These 16th-century carved-wood garden statues represent Nios, wrathful and muscular guardians of the Buddha. Many Buddhist temples today feature a pair like these standing guard at the entrance. The two are together estimated at $9,000-$11,000.

Stultz & Co. was a New York-based builder of player pianos. This 1907 nickelodeon piano-xylophone-drum machine is in good working condition, and it appears this is a video of it in action. It comes with 13 player rolls for hours of musical entertainment from the turn of the previous century, and it carries an estimate of $5,000-$10,000.

Looking like it should be traversing the Nile in an Agatha Christie detective novel is a Marklin Blenheim tin clockwork paddlewheel steamer toy. At 30in in length, the piece features partial restoration and repaints with a detached wheelhouse. The largest paddlewheel steamer made by the company, it is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

David Teniers the Younger (1610-1690) was a Flemish Baroque genre painter who liked to depict everyday people doing everyday things. In Walled Castle with Three Travelers and a Dog, we see Teniers showing people and their trusty canine companion taking in the scenery. The 7.75 by 9.75in painting has a $25,000-$35,000 estimate.

As a key member of the Harlem Renaissance of the 1930s, Beauford Delaney (1901-1979) would eventually relocate to Paris and change his style to abstract expressionism. Untitled No. 4 is a mixed media on Arches paper, laid to hardboard and signed and dated 1963. As is typical with contemporary market demand for works by Delaney, the piece is estimated at $30,000-$40,000.

Ancient Egyptian sculpted pharaoh’s toe brought $38K at Thomaston Place

Silver mounted pink granite toenail fragment from a colossal statue of Ramses II, $31,000 at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.

THOMASTON, Maine — An ancient Egyptian sculptural fragment was the most eagerly contested lot in Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Autumn Majestic sale on November 10, November 11 and November 12. The toe from a monumental pink granite statue of Ramses the Great (1279-1213 B.C.E.) hammered for $31,000 ($38,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

According to a framed letter dated 1919 included with the lot, the 5in (12cm) carving was collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz (1857-1928) in 1899 at the entrance to the Luxor temple. He said he saved it from the crumbling statue as it risked being lost and took it home to Chicago where it was mounted in silver. The mount is inscribed Small Toenail from Colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899.

Krausz wrote a record of his time in Asia Minor, Egypt and India, Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure, published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903.

Another standout lot from the second day was a Rhode Island mahogany block-and-shell chest of the type made famous by the Townsend and Godard workshops of Newport. The type was fashionable for a quarter of the century or more, but most are dated circa 1765. This one was relatively small, at 2ft 10in wide, and had web-less claw and ball feet rather than the more usual tapered ogre bracket feet. The brasswork and the backboards, with termite loss, were thought to be the originals, although some of the interior drawer components were old replacements. “Well deserving of restoration” was the opinion of the cataloger, and bidders agreed. Estimated at an appealing $6,000-$8,000, it hammered for $50,000 ($62,500 with buyer’s premium).

Leading the line was a late Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting of a young girl with flowers in a waterside landscape offered in what was probably the original Impressionist matched corner frame. In a private collection in Maine since it was bought from a New York gallery in 1952, it was estimated at $40,000-$60,000 and took $65,000 ($81,250 with buyer’s premium). The scene, measuring 19 by 16in,  probably depicts Cagnes-asur Mer, where Renoir lived from 1908 to 1919. In fragile health, he suffered from such a debilitating arthritism it required him to change his painting technique, tying brushes to his wrist when needed.

From Americana to Renoir paintings, Thomaston Place’s Nov. 10-12 sale has it

Federal period Sheraton sideboard made for U.S. Navy Captain Joseph Whitmore of Newburyport, Massachusetts, estimated at $6,000-$8,500 at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries.

THOMASTON, Maine – A printed silk broadside recording Thomas Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address to Congress of March 4, 1801 forms part of Thomaston Place Auction GalleriesAutumn Majestic Sale, taking place Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 12. Absentee and Internet live bidding will be available through LiveAuctioneers.

Printed by in Boston by William Pechin, it is one of only four recorded copies on silk known to exist. Jefferson gave his address in ‘Washingtin City’, in the Congressional Hall (the only completed room in the new Capitol building), using his 1,725 words to plead for unity among the new country’s factional politicians. He famously declared, “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names, brethren of the same principles. We are all Republicans”.

Many more similar ink-on-silk printings survive of Jefferson’s 1805 speech for his Second Inauguration. These were available by subscription and published in quantity by True & Parks of Boston. However, this 12 by 15in broadside from 1801 has an estimate of $7,000-$9,000.

A fine example of Federal period furniture appearing in the sale lineup is a Sheraton sideboard made for U.S. Navy Captain Joseph Whitmore of Newburyport, Massachusetts. As a young man, he was injured at Bunker Hill, and endured a mutiny and a plague of yellow fever while on the U.S.S. Warren in Havana harbor. His son, also named Joseph, opened the Amazon River to steam navigation, for which the U.S. Congress issued him a gold medal.

The family’s sideboard, made in mahogany with unusual birch side panels, was sold in 1929 from the estate for $1,600 (about $28,000 in today’s money). It comes with the original bill of sale and an estimate of $6,000-$8,500.

Another well-provenanced piece of Americana with a Newburyport, Massachusetts connection is a carved and painted spruce eagle by local woodcarver Joseph Wilson (1779-1857). Remarkably, this 2ft 3in high architectural element is known from an albumen photo stereoview card showing it in situ on a building on State Street in Newburyport circa 1870. Retaining much of the original paint, it has an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.

The large and diverse inventory at Thomaston Place ranges from the modern to the ancient. Representing the latter category is an ancient Egyptian sculptural fragment that comes in a silver mount inscribed ‘Small toenail from colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899.’ According to a letter dated 1919 included with the lot, the 5in pink granite carving was collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz in 1899 at the entrance to the Luxor temple. It was purportedly from one of the colossal statues of Ramses II (1279-1213 BCE). Krausz wrote a record of his time in Asia Minor, Egypt and India, titled Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure, published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903.

Leading the lineup are some big-hitting oil paintings. A late Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting of a young girl with flowers in a waterside landscape comes in what is probably the original Impressionist matched corner frame. In a private collection in Maine since it was bought from a New York gallery in 1952, it is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. The scene probably depicts Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir lived from 1908-19. During that period, he was in fragile health and suffering from arthritis so debilitating it required him to change his painting technique, tying brushes to his wrist when needed.

THOMASTON, Maine — Thomaston Place Auction Galleries will present collections of international tribal artifacts and antiquities in a two-day sale to be held Friday, September 22 and Saturday, September 23 (Day 1, Day 2). The auction will include groups of African, Oceanic, Native American and Inuit, Pre-Columbian and ancient Mediterranean artifacts from estates and collections throughout the northeastern United States.

“We have gathered an exciting inventory of rare items, representing the creative energy of diverse cultures from ancient to modern times,” said Thomaston Place Auction Galleries owner Kaja Veilleux.

One of the sale’s top lots is an extremely rare Mayan censer, dating to 550-950 A.D., depicting the decapitated head of a sacrificial victim painted in Mayan blue — the preferred color to paint people before they would lose their heads, so to speak. When it is in use, smoke emits from the ears and mouth. It carries an estimate of $6,500-$7,500.

Purchased in the Old Curiosity Shop on Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles in the 1950s, this royal gilded Tumi with bells would have been worn by the Lord King of the Mochicas of first-century A.D. Peru. Mochica ceramic depictions of warriors show this exact item being worn. It is estimated at $8,500-$9,500.

The Kuba people of Zaire created this beaded helmet or mask. Made of wood, the helmet-mask features glass beads, shells, skin, monkey fur and copper. The artwork depicts Bawoom, brother of Woot, and is estimated at $6,000-$8,000.

THOMASTON, Maine — Fine artworks were the big winner at the August Grandeur sale (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3) at Thomaston Place Auction Galleries on August 25-27. The sale was featured on LiveAuctioneers.

Famed Dutch artist Christiaan Hendrik Beekman (1887-1964) specialized in geometric works throughout his lengthy career, with many exhibitions to his credit. His Untitled Abstract in White, Grey and Black from 1920 is an interesting representative study in three colors, achieving $55,000 ($68,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimated $25,000-$35,000.

A fiery oil-on-canvas depiction of the naval battle between American and British forces by T. H. Adams made $11,000 ($13,750 with buyer’s premium), having been estimated at only $1,000-$2,000. The piece features the Bonhomme Richard and HMS Serapis in 1779.

New Jersey Landscape with Woman Standing Under Tree in Wetlands at Sunset, by the famed American painter who earned the title of “father of American landscape artists,” George Inness, skyrocketed to $30,000 ($37,500 with buyer’s premium). Inness was one of the most well known and respected American artists in the 19th century.

Two legendary brands — White Star Line and Moët and Chandon — appear together in this unfinished oil-on-canvas advertising artwork that depicts both the Olympic and Titanic ships. It sold for $10,000 ($12,500 with buyer’s premium). The piece was originally estimated at $3,500-$4,000.
