Renowned Ernest and Ella Brummer antiquities collection topped $2M at Hindman

CHICAGO – Antiquities from the collection of famed art dealer Ernest Brummer (1891-1964) more than quadrupled their presale estimate, commanding a combined total of more than $2 million at Hindman on December 5. All 38 lots from the legendary collection sold, with lots achieving as much as 25 times their estimates. The pieces came by descent from Brummer’s widow Ella Bache Brummer and then to her nephew John Laszlo of Atlanta, Georgia.

Ernest Brummer was a renowned art dealer who, along with his brother Joseph, founded the historically significant Brummer Galleries, which held paramount importance in both New York and Paris during the early to mid-20th century. The galleries played a pivotal role in shaping the tastes and collections of art enthusiasts and museums alike.

The top lot of the day was a Roman marble head of a youth wearing a laurel wreath, which sold for a staggering $400,000 ($504,000 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $40,000-$60,000. The head depicted a youth with uniformly idealized features and classic proportions, suggesting it was inspired by the famed fifth-century BCE works of Polykleitos. Variants of well-known Greek originals became fashionable during the Republican period with the Roman elite, who utilized these loose so-called ‘copies’ to create mythological ensembles to decorate their gardens and villas. The marble head had been in the U.S. for more than a century, having been owned by the New York architect Isaac Newton Phelps Stokes (1867-1944) from the 1920s.

Another Roman marble head that drew significant attention was a second century CE head of a triton that sold for $180,000 ($226,800 with buyer’s premium), easily surpassing its $80,000-$120,000 estimate. The head closely resembles the pair of tritons at the Musei Capitolini that originally flanked the famed Commodus portrait of Horti Lamiani, leading to the logical conclusion that the head is also meant to belong to a mythological creature with the torso of a man and an elaborate fishtail.

A deep provenance was key to the performance of many lots. Leading the Egyptian category was a 19in wood sculpture depicting the head of Osiris, which sold for $250,000 ($315,000 with buyer’s premium), more than 10 times its presale estimate of $30,000-$50,000. Not only had this 26th Dynasty piece survived more than two millennia in remarkable condition, it had a modern-day ownership history dating back to the German missionary and collector Rev. Johann Lieder (1798-1865) and then, from 1861, to the great Egyptology collection of William Tyssen-Amherst (1835-1909).

The Brummer collection was offered as a single-owner session to begin Hindman’s Antiquities & Ancient Art auction, which achieved a sales total of $2.95 million.

“The results today show just how impactful the Brummer legacy remains even decades after their legendary gallery closed its doors,” said Hindman’s Director and Senior Specialist of Antiquities & Ancient Art, Jacob Coley. “The carefully curated collection, spanning various artistic periods and styles, embodied the Brummers’ discerning taste and passion for art.”

Additional property from the Brummer collection will be offered in various Hindman auctions during 2023 and early 2024, including a mid-15th-century French limestone figure of the Foolish Virgin, which will appear in the February 2024 European Furniture & Decorative Arts auction.

Ancient Egyptian sculpted pharaoh’s toe brought $38K at Thomaston Place

THOMASTON, Maine — An ancient Egyptian sculptural fragment was the most eagerly contested lot in Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Autumn Majestic sale on November 10, November 11 and November 12. The toe from a monumental pink granite statue of Ramses the Great (1279-1213 B.C.E.) hammered for $31,000 ($38,750 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of $2,000-$4,000.

According to a framed letter dated 1919 included with the lot, the 5in (12cm) carving was collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz (1857-1928) in 1899 at the entrance to the Luxor temple. He said he saved it from the crumbling statue as it risked being lost and took it home to Chicago where it was mounted in silver. The mount is inscribed Small Toenail from Colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899.

Krausz wrote a record of his time in Asia Minor, Egypt and India, Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure, published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903.

Another standout lot from the second day was a Rhode Island mahogany block-and-shell chest of the type made famous by the Townsend and Godard workshops of Newport. The type was fashionable for a quarter of the century or more, but most are dated circa 1765. This one was relatively small, at 2ft 10in wide, and had web-less claw and ball feet rather than the more usual tapered ogre bracket feet. The brasswork and the backboards, with termite loss, were thought to be the originals, although some of the interior drawer components were old replacements. “Well deserving of restoration” was the opinion of the cataloger, and bidders agreed. Estimated at an appealing $6,000-$8,000, it hammered for $50,000 ($62,500 with buyer’s premium).

Leading the line was a late Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting of a young girl with flowers in a waterside landscape offered in what was probably the original Impressionist matched corner frame. In a private collection in Maine since it was bought from a New York gallery in 1952, it was estimated at $40,000-$60,000 and took $65,000 ($81,250 with buyer’s premium). The scene, measuring 19 by 16in,  probably depicts Cagnes-asur Mer, where Renoir lived from 1908 to 1919. In fragile health, he suffered from such a debilitating arthritism it required him to change his painting technique, tying brushes to his wrist when needed.

Authenticated ancient art, artifacts and jewelry emerge at Apollo Dec. 17

LONDON – Antiquities and cultural art continue to grow in popularity, particularly for those who recognize the way in which an ancient artwork – whether a statue, a tapestry or a painted vessel – can elevate the tone of a room’s décor. Apollo Art Auctions has announced a Sunday, December 17 online-only auction of expertly authenticated, well-provenanced artifacts from Classical Europe through Egypt and the Near East, as well as many art treasures of China, India and the Islamic world. The catalog is now available for bidding at LiveAuctioneers.

Nearly 60 lots of ancient Egyptian art will be auctioned. This rimmed stone plate or tray with a surface displaying a beautiful array of natural veins is among the leading lots. Made circa-3000-2750 BCE, it was formerly the property of a North London gentleman and, prior to that, was part of a private collection formed in Paris in the 1970s. It is estimated at £4,000-£6,000 ($5,010-$7,520).

Applied arts were at the center of Classical Greek culture. An Attic red-figure krater with an attractive inverted bell-shape body dates to around the late 4th-3rd century BCE and measures 290 by 290mm (11.4 by 11.4in). Its richly painted program consists of a winged figure of Hypnos holding a trident on Side A, and a robed female, probably representing the deceased, on Side B. British and Continental European provenance can be traced back to its 1990s purchase in Paris. The krater is estimated at £4,000-£6,000 ($5,010-$7,520).

The sale will commence with a much earlier Greek production dating to circa 5th century BCE: a compelling bas-relief marble face with well-formed, nicely proportioned features, mounted on a custom-made stand. Its provenance includes the collection of a North London gentleman and, prior to that, a European collection and acquisition in Paris in the 1990s. The piece is estimated at £6,000-£9,000 ($7,520-$11,290).

From the Roman Imperial period, a circa-100-300 CE marble funerary plaque serves as an eternal tribute to ‘ABURIA PROCULA’ and is carved with three lines of Latin inscription. It measures 220 by 330mm (8.7 by 13in). Most recently the property of a London gallery and previously acquired on the Dutch art market, it was also once owned by Cedric Renard, who obtained it on the Brussels art market in 1984. It carries an estimate of £4,000-£6,000 ($5,010-$7,520).

A circa-400 BCE Hellenistic carnelian intaglio portrait of a mature bearded man set in a gold ring of a later period is also featured. It has been held in successive British collections since its 1970s acquisition on the U.K. art market. It is estimated at £4,000-£6,000 ($5,010-$7,520).

Another wonderful jewelry highlight is a Byzantine gold ring dating to circa 1200 CE. Its rectangular bezel is carved with an ‘IC’ monogram for Jesus and has a laurel-wreath inscription for ‘Scorpio.’ The ring has been XRF tested and claims an illustrious provenance. Prior to its ownership by a London ancient art gallery, it was part of the celebrated collection of the late London barrister Alison Barker, who acquired it sometime between the early 1960s and 1990s. The ring has an estimate of £2,000-£3,000 ($2,500-$3,760).

HARWICH, U.K. – An ancient Egyptian shabti from the famous Deir el-Bahari cache comes for sale at Timeline Auctions in an event spanning Tuesday, December 5 through Saturday, December 9. The blue faience shabti from the tomb of the 21st Dynasty princess Nesitanebisheru is estimated at £25,000-£35,000 ($30,700-$43,000) as part of the five-day sale devoted to antiquities (Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, Day 5).

The so-called Deir el-Bahari hoard was discovered in a settlement near Thebes in 1870. Found together in this single chamber were the mummies and funerary equipment of dozens of ancient Egyptian elites, seemingly reburied by priests to hide them from tomb robbers. DNA analysis has subsequently shown that the bodies of the great pharaohs Thutmose III and Ramesses II were among them.

This is one of the many faience ‘worker’ shabtis (burial figures) that was interred with the princess Nesitanebisheru. The daughter of Pinudjem II, a high priest of Amun, and his principal wife Neskhons, she lived circa 980-935 BCE during the 21st Dynasty and the tumultuous era known to Egyptologists as the Third Intermediate Period.

The shabtis that accompanied her to the afterlife were each inscribed in black with columns of hieroglyphic text outlining the duties they would need to perform ‘for the Osiris Nesitanebisheru.’ In this case, the spell tasks the shabti with the moving of soil and the cultivating and irrigating of fields.

The shabti was acquired by the European vendor at the Zurich Antiquities Fair from the Geneva dealership R. Liechti.

Another item imported to the U.K. from continental Europe for sale is a marble head dated to the 2nd-3rd century CE. Unlike many Roman portrait fragments that appear at auction, this does not glorify a goddess or an emperor and instead depicts a Germanic ‘barbarian.’ It was possibly from a relief representing prisoners of war, perhaps part of a monument commemorating the campaigns of Marcus Aurelius along the lower Danube, recorded on his famous column in Piazza Colonna, Rome.

Modeled naturalistically in the round, his face is framed by voluminous short curls, sideburns and a mustache. The head was in a Swiss private collection before it was sold by Christie’s in 2013, and it is now estimated at £25,000-£35,000 ($30,700-$43,000).

From Hellenistic Greece is a silver strainer estimated at £15,000-£20,000 ($18,400-$24,500). Elaborate strainers of this type with handles fashioned with swan head terminals were used at symposia and festive occasions in the 4th and 3rd century CE for filtering out sediments in wine.

Examples similar to this have been found in royal tombs in northern Greece. This example was last sold at Christie’s, New York in 2012 and previously resided in a German private collection.

Estimated at £4,000-£6,000 ($4,900-$7,300) are the plates from a 12th or 13th century klivanion. The 138 iron elements would have been interlaced and attached to an undergarment to form a compact cuirass. The lamellar protection was particularly effective when used by mounted troops as it provided not just protection but enabled free movement due to its loose construction. This survivor comes from a vendor in London and was acquired by his grandfather sometime before the early 1970s.

THOMASTON, Maine – A printed silk broadside recording Thomas Jefferson’s First Inaugural Address to Congress of March 4, 1801 forms part of Thomaston Place Auction Galleries’ Autumn Majestic Sale, taking place Friday, November 10 through Sunday, November 12. Printed by in Boston by William Pechin, it is one of only four recorded copies on silk known to exist. Jefferson gave his address in ‘Washingtin City’, in the Congressional Hall (the only completed room in the new Capitol building), using his 1,725 words to plead for unity among the new country’s factional politicians. He famously declared, “Every difference of opinion is not a difference of principle. We have called by different names, brethren of the same principles. We are all Republicans”.

Many more similar ink-on-silk printings survive of Jefferson’s 1805 speech for his Second Inauguration. These were available by subscription and published in quantity by True & Parks of Boston. However, this 12 by 15in broadside from 1801 has an estimate of $7,000-$9,000.

A fine example of Federal period furniture appearing in the sale lineup is a Sheraton sideboard made for U.S. Navy Captain Joseph Whitmore of Newburyport, Massachusetts. As a young man, he was injured at Bunker Hill, and endured a mutiny and a plague of yellow fever while on the U.S.S. Warren in Havana harbor. His son, also named Joseph, opened the Amazon River to steam navigation, for which the U.S. Congress issued him a gold medal.

The family’s sideboard, made in mahogany with unusual birch side panels, was sold in 1929 from the estate for $1,600 (about $28,000 in today’s money). It comes with the original bill of sale and an estimate of $6,000-$8,500.

Another well-provenanced piece of Americana with a Newburyport, Massachusetts connection is a carved and painted spruce eagle by local woodcarver Joseph Wilson (1779-1857). Remarkably, this 2ft 3in high architectural element is known from an albumen photo stereoview card showing it in situ on a building on State Street in Newburyport circa 1870. Retaining much of the original paint, it has an estimate of $2,000-$3,000.

The large and diverse inventory at Thomaston Place ranges from the modern to the ancient. Representing the latter category is an ancient Egyptian sculptural fragment that comes in a silver mount inscribed ‘Small toenail from colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899.’ According to a letter dated 1919 included with the lot, the 5in pink granite carving was collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz in 1899 at the entrance to the Luxor temple. It was purportedly from one of the colossal statues of Ramses II (1279-1213 BCE). Krausz wrote a record of his time in Asia Minor, Egypt and India, titled Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure, published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903.

Leading the lineup are some big-hitting oil paintings. A late Pierre-Auguste Renoir painting of a young girl with flowers in a waterside landscape comes in what is probably the original Impressionist matched corner frame. In a private collection in Maine since it was bought from a New York gallery in 1952, it is estimated at $40,000-$60,000. The scene probably depicts Cagnes-sur-Mer, where Renoir lived from 1908-19. CAMBRIDGE, U.K. – While the Dundee-born painter Catherine Read (1723-78) is considered the first Scottish woman to work as a professional artist, a close second was Ann Forbes (1745-1834). Born in Inveresk, East Lothian, the granddaughter of the portrait painter William Aikman (1682-1731), Forbes demonstrated remarkable talent and determination to further her artistic education in Italy at a time when female artists were excluded from the training given to male students. Tutored in Rome by the ex-pat Scottish artists Gavin Hamilton and James Nevay, she returned home in 1771 as a competent oil painter and opened a short-lived portrait studio in the cut-and-thrust of Georgian London. Poor health forced her back to Edinburgh, but she recovered and made a living in the city as a drawing teacher and a portraitist.

Forbes’ likeness is best known through a 1781 painting by her friend David Allen (1744-1796) that hangs in the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. She is shown in an embroidered white shawl working at the easel, her gaze turned away from the viewer in steely determination.

The 21 by 18in (52 by 41cm) Forbes self-portrait offered by Cheffins as part of a two-day sale on September 20-21 showed the artist in a similar guise. Worked in the artist’s favorite medium of pastels on paper, she is again shown holding portfolio and the porte-crayon favored by many Georgian artists.

Former owners of this picture included the eminent British rower and Olympian Frederick Pitman (1892-1963) and the British journalist and Reuters manager Sir Christopher Chancellor (1904-89). However, at a moment when women artists of all eras are being reassessed, its commercial value has probably never been higher. Estimated at £800-£1,200, it hammered at £8,500 (£10,580, or $12,700 including buyer’s premium).

LONDON – Bonhams’ London Jewels sale on September 21 was topped by a Chaumet diamond necklace that hammered for £240,000 (£304,800, or $368,200 with buyer’s premium) against an estimate of £120,000-£150,000.

Made around 1900, the striking design was conceived in 1896 when the firm was commissioned to make a tiara for the Archduchess Maria Dorothea of Austria (1867-1932) for her wedding to Philippe, Duke of Orleans. The first version, noted for having ‘inverted arches interspersed with laurel-leaf elements supporting large diamonds in tapered openwork mounts,’ was convertible to a necklace. Such was the design’s popularity that several slightly different versions were made. This is one of them, and a rare survivor.

Mounted in silver and gold and signed Chaumet Paris, it includes old brilliant- and table-cut, cushion- and pear-shaped diamonds with a total weight of approximately 32 carats.

Other jewels were made by Chaumet incorporating similar ‘floating laurel leaves.’ At the 1900 Paris Exposition, the jury noted M. Chaumet’s technical mastery and how his elegant jewels were carefully designed to enhance important gemstones.

LONDON – A three-quarter length portrait by Mason Chamberlin (1727-87) of the London merchant Joseph Nash (d. 1782) was the most eagerly contested lot at Sotheby’s online sale of Old Masters and 19th Century Paintings that concluded on September 20. Estimated at £8,000-£12,000, it received 32 bids before selling at £32,000 (£40,640, or $49,100, including buyer’s premium).

Although Chamberlin was a founding member of the Royal Academy, and best remembered for his portrait of Benjamin Franklin now in the Philadelphia Museum of Art, it was the subject matter more than the artist that drove the bidding for this 4ft 2in by 4ft 7in oil on canvas.

Closer inspection of this otherwise workmanlike Georgian portrait shows the subject holding a prominently placed printed pamphlet. From the text just visible on the tattered cover, it is probable that it is a printed version of Memorial Suggesting Motives for the Improvement of the Sugar Colonies. This work, by the proto-abolitionist James Ramsay (1733-89), was an important forerunner calling for an end to the use of slave labor in the West Indies. It was widely circulated among the elite of London in the 1760s before its final publication in 1778.

The Nash family were successful wholesale grocers from Worcester with premises in Cannon Street in the City of London. Joseph’s father William Nash (d. 1775) had been an alderman and a sheriff and was made Lord Mayor of London in 1771.

It is likely that Nash may have come across the work of Ramsay, who was by profession a surgeon, through his father-in-law and fellow merchant John Darker of Gayton (circa 1722–84), the Member of Parliament for Leicester and treasurer of St. Bartholomew’s Hospital in London. The painting was on the market for the first time, having come by descent in the family from the sitter to the present owner.

LOUISVILLE, Colo. – Artemis Gallery’s September 22 sale included a set of finely preserved ancient Egyptian sculptor’s tools: a 4in wooden mallet and a 3in copper chisel. They date from sometime between the 18th Dynasty of the New Kingdom (the era of Tutankhamun) and the 31st Dynasty, when Egypt became part of the Persian empire.

Mallets of this petite size served a votive purpose rather than as functional tools. It was probably made as an offering to a sculptor or mason of some status or skill.

Very much part of their commercial appeal today is a long provenance that predates the tightening of Egyptian export laws in the 1920s and namechecks some of the best-known museums in the U.S.

Once in the collection of the Egyptologist Émile Brugsch (1842-1930), curator of the Bulaq Museum in Luxor (the precursor of the Egyptian Museum in Cairo’s Tahrir Square), the mallet and chisel were later owned by the banker Anthony J. Drexel (1826-1893) and formed part of the antiquities collection at Drexel University, Philadelphia that was later sold to the Minneapolis Institute of Art (1915-58) and dispersed on the art market in the 1950s.

Since then, as part of the William Benson Harer family collection, it has been exhibited at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (1986-91), the University of Arizona Museum of Art, (1993) and the Robert and Frances Fullerton Museum of Art, San Bernardino (1996-2023).

Estimated at $2,000-$2,500, the lot sold to an internet bidder via LiveAuctioneers for $6,000 ($7,590 including buyer’s premium).

OAKLAND, Calif. – A textbook oil on canvas by the French Impressionist Henry Moret (1856-1913) led the field at Clars Auction Gallery on September 14. The Dutch coastal scene dating to the year 1900 got away at the low end of an estimate of $50,000-$70,000, ultimately achieving $65,500 with the buyer’s premium.

Moret is best known for his involvement in the Pont-Aven artist colony and his richly colored landscapes of Brittany. He enjoyed a particularly fruitful relationship with the influential dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, who maintained a number of galleries in Paris, London and New York, and sold an estimated 600 paintings this way.

Moret only infrequently traveled away from Pont-Aven, but a number of his works with a 1900 date depict Holland. Maisons a Volendam, Hollande is a good example of his bold palette choices and forceful and short brushstrokes, a style he credited to Claude Monet.

NEWBURY, U.K. – Dreweatts Donnington Priory will auction the personal collection of Robert Kime (1946-2022), the man known across the world as a titan of design and a polymath who was dubbed the ‘great assembler’ of beautiful things. Kime’s unique eye and aesthetic sensibility led him to become a leading interior design figure. The culmination of his lifetime of collecting will form a three-day auction at Dreweatts titled Robert Kime: The Personal Collection, which will take place on October 4-6 and will comprise more than 750 lots ranging in value from £30 to £100,000 ($38 to $127,700). It is expected to achieve in excess of £1.5 million (roughly $1.9 million).
