Description
ENGLISH STAFFORDSHIRE AMERICAN HISTORICAL CERAMIC FIGURES, LOT OF TWO, each depicting Benjamin Franklin standing and wearing a blue jacket, with a tri-corner hat under left arm, and holding a document in right hand with gilt accents, one example with round base mislabeled "Washington" in gilt script to front, the other with square base having "FRANKLIN" embossed to front. Third quarter 19th century. 14" and 15 3/8" H.
Mostly undamaged having characteristic light hairlines and moderate crazing.
Literature: The Hardings - Victorian Staffordshire Figures, 1835-1875, Book One, "Franklin" example parallels p. 61, fig. 136, and "Washington" example parallels p. 137, fig. 342.
Provenance: The collection of the late Theodore "Ted" and Alvina Breckel, Oley, PA and Winnetka, IL.
