North America, Native American, Ohio, Eastern Woodland, ca. 200 to 1000 CE. A double-headed axe or hammer head with a groove in the center running three quarters of the width around. The groove was used for attaching the stone to a short handle with fibrous twine or leather straps. The rounded heads were for shaping or cutting wood or softer stones. This stone is a mottled black and russet color with a smooth surface along the groove and part of the heads. The stone may have been a river stone, shaped by Mother Nature before being selected to use as a tool. Size: 3.75" L x 2" W x 2.6" H (9.5 cm x 5.1 cm x 6.6 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000
