North Carolina. April 2, 1776. Halifax Issue. Fifteen Dollars. "Boar" Vignette. PCGS graded Choice About New-55.
Fr. NC-168. Only 5,000 notes printed. This desirable Fifteen Dollars denomination is one of the most difficult to locate, specially in high grade, of this popular 1776 issue. The black printed text and designs are all very clear and sharp, while the "Boar" vignette is distinct in every detail. It is rarely encountered and far above average in quality for the issue. There is a tiny deft sealed bottom centerfold edge split and some typical contemporary notations on the blank reverse. Signatures of Sumner, Webb, Williams, and Haywood present. Its PCGS holder notes at bottom right, edge tear, adhesive residue from sealing the split on the blank reverse and a stain which appears to be ink spread from one drop that happened when being signed. This second highest denomination is an important "Key" to the completion of this historic 56-type set on this North Carolina issue. The (2008) 5th Edition of Eric Newman's reference, "The Early Paper Money of America" lists a value of $1,000 in VF. There is no value listing in "EF" or in any higher quality. Also, whereas most other denominations had 10,000 or more notes issued, this $15 had only 5,000 and is thus rarer.
