Union General Joshua Chamberlain Document Signed as Governor of Maine
Joshua Chamberlain (1828-1914). College professor from Maine who volunteered his services and became a Medal of Honor-winning Brevet Major General, and later a four-time Governor of Maine and president of Bowdoin College. DS as Governor of Maine, a state volunteer service testimonial to Nelson Howard, dated July 4, 1868, at Augusta, signed Joshua L. Chamberlain boldly in black ink. Nelson Howard of Phillips, Maine, served in Co. E, 13th Maine Infantry, as a Sergeant and First Sergeant, December 10, 1861 to January 4, 1865. He was then commissioned a 1st Lieutenant Co. B, 30th Maine Infantry, and served through the end of the war. Professionally framed, 12 x 16 in. sight, 17 x 21 in. overall.
Separation at fold lines, but set in place in the frame. One fold passes through Joshua. Signature is very good.
