Superb B. Cardozo Signed Quote w/ Added Supreme Court Bonus!
Signed Quote, 5.25" x 3.5", mounted to a beige backing and boldly signed by the Supreme Court Justice as "Benjamin N. Cardozo." Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA to an overall size of 4.125" x 7.5". Scattered toning, evidence of mounting on verso.
The quote reads:
"The submergence of self in the pursuit of an idea, the readiness to spend oneself without measure, prodigally, almost ecstatically, for something great and noble, to spend oneself, one knows not why,-- some of us like to believe that this is what religion means."
The famous quote comes from the commencement address at the Jewish Institute of Religion which Cardozo made in 1931.
Also included in the lot is Willis Van Devanter cut signature removed from a letter and mounted to a beige backing. The cut is boldly signed by the Supreme Court Justice as "Willis Van Devanter." Encapsulated and authenticated by PSA/DNA to an overall size of 4.125" x 7.5". Scattered toning and evidence of prior mounting on verso. Â
