Large Civil War Archive - Capt. Amos Wells

Item Details

Description

A huge archive of letters and other ephemera written by or relating to Captain Amos Wells of Ogdensburgh, NY. (1837-1919). Wells was a Captain in the 142nd NY Volunteers. 79 letters written by Wells to his Aunt Mary C. Gordon. Most with the envelopes. Letters span the years 1863-1865. One is dated 1862. The letters contain much information about daily life, good and bad. One letter of April 18, 1865 mentions the end of the War and a report of Lincoln's assassination. Wells notes: "Yet we do not fully credit the Report." The archive also includes some letters to him, other letters to Aunt Mary from relatives. There are two photographs: one unnamed male and one of Aunt Mary. One pass issued to "40 men to travel to the River to Bathe". Other later 19th century related material. The Archive is contained in 3 portfolio bindings with mylar pages (black paper inserts). Combined dimensions are: H 17 1/4" W 16" D 4". A rare opportunity to obtain a wonderful collection of one man's journey through the Civil War.
